John, King of England 1167-1216, king of England (1199-1216); youngest son of HENRY II. After his brother RICHARD I left on the Third CRUSADE, John conspired unsuccessfully with PHILIP II of France to supplant Richard as king. On Richard's death, John ascended the throne to the exclusion of his nephew ARTHUR I of Brittany, who, with the aid of Philip II, began a revolt in France. Although Arthur was captured (1202), John lost many of his French possessions to Philip. John's refusal to accept a new archbishop of Canterbury led to his excommunication (1209). To regain papal favor, he surrendered (1213) his kingdom to Pope INNOCENT III, and received it back as a papal fief. In England his abuse of feudal custom in raising money aroused intense opposition from the barons. They rebelled in 1215 and compelled John to set his seal to the MAGNA CARTA. He was succeeded by his son HENRY III.
Benajah's children, Martha + James Walter lived with their grandfather Templin after Mary's death. Mrs. Daisy Stinnett of Chestnut Hill wrote me a letter stating that her mother told her Martha took James and ran away to live with their father, Benejah, because their grandfather Templin had remarried and his wife and other daughters were mean to Martha and Walter. Benejah raised both of them and left property to them. He lived with my grandparents James Walter and Nancy Malinda (Ketner) Proffitt after they were married.spouse: >Templin, Mary C. (~1848 - <1880)

James Walter and Nancy sold their property and moved to Niota, McMinn County, Tennessee after Walter visited a friend and liked the looks of the land. It must have been hard for Nancy to leave her family behind and make the move. I was told by a cousin that Nancy and the younger children traveled by train to Niota and the older sons, Roy and Victor, drove wagons containing their furniture. They moved from Niota to Reagan Station in early 1919 after buying the Reagan house. This house was built before the Civil War by Mr. Reagan's ancestors. Walter built a new house next door to the old one for Nancy but she died a few months after moving, from being given too much ether during a routine surgery. Walter died two years later from a heart attack.spouse: >Ketner, Nancy Malinda (1878 - 1929)

12 August 1828, John Wesley Proffitt received a Tennessee land grant (No. 155500 book 15, page 65 ) for 50 acres in Jefferson County. On this same date he is shown to have received another 50 acres in Jefferson County, in Book 15, Page 68. John was appointed overseer of a road of the second class from the Sevier County line to Joseph Hill's Home on 12 September 1829. The 30 June 1841 school enumeration for Jefferson County, district #35, indicates John and Susannah had a daughter that would have been born abt. 1826. Her name and other information not known by this compiler. All of Susannah (Webb) Proffitt's children (with the possible exception of a female daughter, name and life activities unknown to this compiler) moved to Yancy County, North Carolina sometime after Susannah and her husband, John, died. They are found living with, or near their uncle David Proffitt in Elk Shoales. The date and place of John and Susannah's death is unknown. A gravesite has not been found for them in Tennessee. It is most likely that they were in Yancey County, North Carolina when they died.

Walter Jr. was orphaned after the death of his father. His oldest brother, Roy Benejah Proffitt, was appointed guardian and moved with his family into the Reagan House to care for Walter and his sister Ruth. Ruth was later taken to Chestnut Hill to live with Shell and Fannie (Bush) Clevenger. Walter, Jr. and Ruth were taken to court by their brothers, Buel and Patrick, in order to break their father's will and sell the house and farm before Walter and Ruth were 21 years of age. The older children of Walter, Sr. had already sold their share in the property for $500.00 each. source: Court documentsspouse: >Clevenger, Mildred Irene (1916 - 1994)Walter was a steam fitter by trade + worked for Tennessee Valley Authority for over 25 years.
