ACCOMPLISHMENT HIGHLIGHTS
· A
one-year pilot program in partnership with The Queens College Center for Environmental
Teaching and Research at Caumsett State Park that within three years was officially funded
by the school district as a permanent part of the primary school curriculum.
· A National Shakespeare Company
arts-in-education program for all ninth graders in 2000, which included class visits by
professional actors, a staged performance of a Shakespearean play, and participation in a
Youth Shakespeare Festival.
· A listening center for the Southdown
Intermediate School library.
· AutoCad software to enhance
architecture and design classes at Huntington HS.
· Robotics equipment for the
intermediate schools science departments.
· A poetry-in-residence program for 1998
-99 at Finley Middle School, at the request of the English Department, as a pilot
program for possible adoption by the district.
· A high-powered electron microscope and
incubator to enable the high school science department to raise and study nematodes for
genetics research.
· Renovation of the Jefferson Primary
School courtyard to incorporate environmental studies and a
weather station.
· The establishment of a Field Trip
Fund, a cash reserve for the districts principals which enables all
childrenregardless of financial needto participate in school-sponsored trips.
· The establishment of a Greenkill
Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships for students who cannot afford the full cost
of participating in this top-ranked, hands-on environmental program that culminates the
sixth-grade science curriculum.
· A United Way link for individuals in
corporate environments to designate money to both the Field Trip and Greenkill Funds (code
#026811)
· An inter-disciplinary
arts-in-education program at the primary schools, called Tales of Anasi, the
Spider, presented by the Grumbling Gryphons Theatre for Black History Month

· An AIDS Awareness Program at
Huntington High School.
· An electronic projection system that
allows teachers to display information generated by a desk- or laptop computer.
· A multi-cultural Human Relations Day
at Finley Middle School designed to increase tolerance in our multi-lingual, diverse
community.
· An elementary school
artist-in-residence program in dance.
· Re-establishment of the Huntington
High School Alumni Association.
· Designation of Huntington by the
McGraw-Hill Companies as a pilot school district to help test innovative technology-based
instructional programs.
· Co-funded a stadium press box with a
quality address system and space for viewing and videotaping field events.
· Project Adventure, a self-esteem
physical education program based on the well-known Outward Bound program, at Huntington
High School.
· Equipment for Finleys annual
Supreme Court Invitational Tournament.
· A pilot amplification system in Flower
Hill and Jefferson Primary Schools.
· Family Literacy Night at Woodhull
Early Childhood Center.
· Math and language arts backpacks at
Flower Hill Primary School.
· A guided reading and writing program
at Washington Primary School.
