HFEE Grant Information
The
Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education has awarded more than $200,000 for
educational enrichment programs in the Huntington Union Free School District since 1994.
All grants funded by HFEE are initiated by teachers or
administrators.
The Foundation offers two types of grants. The first type is called a "Mini
Grant", which is awarded for projects costing $1,000 or less. The second is
called a "Reach for the Stars Grant", which is awarded for projects
costing from $1,000 - $10,000.
Mini Grants
The purpose of the Mini Grants program is to provide special
projects money up to $1,000 for classroom activities that are beyond the core curriculum
such as new computer software, a wildlife garden, and disability awareness workshops.
A request for proposals is sent to the teaching staff and administration in the autumn
of the year with a 30-day deadline. A teacher who wishes to obtain funding for a project
in his or her classroom completes the grant application describing the idea and its
benefits, and after gaining approval from his or her school principal, sends it to HFEE. A committee reviews all grant proposals and makes the final
selection. Funds are announced before the December break so that teachers can implement
their projects during that school year.

Reach for the Stars Grant
The purpose of the Reach for the Stars Grants is to fuel grade and school wide initiatives that have a
broad impact or grand vision of education. Reach for the Stars Grants usually exceed
$1,000 and have been as high as $10,000 such as computers for an entirely new course in
visual arts, a National Shakespeare Company arts-in-education program for all 9th
graders, and a one-year pilot program in partnership with the Queens College Center for
Environmental Teaching and Research at Caumsett State Park that is now a permanent part of
the primary-school curriculum.
The program
is open for applications throughout the year and invites teachers and administrators to
apply for funds for grade-wide, department-wide or school-wide initiatives. An applicant
who wishes to obtain funding for a project completes the grant application describing the
idea and its benefits sends it to HFEE. A committee
reviews all grant proposals and makes the final selection.
