From a professional development
perspective, there are plenty of things I would love to achieve in the
coming years. One of the first things I plan to do is expand the breadth
of my knowledge. Not surprisingly, the research component of my PhD has
taken up a lot of my time and energy and after I'm finished this degree
I would like to 'up-skill' in the areas that I have previously not been
able to concentrate on. For example, when I was on placement at Belmont
Private Hospital I was given a very brief introduction to schema-focused
therapy, and narrative therapy. These are two areas I'd like to learn more
about once I have more time in my schedule.
I would also like to gain employment overseas so that I can experience life as a psychologist outside of Australia. I have heard may urban legends about how psychologists are treated overseas, with the majority of people telling me that both the UK and America is a great place to work as a psychologist. I look forward to finding out for mywself in the future. I think the greatest thing that will happen to me over the next few years is working more independently of the somewhat protective environment of the University. I have a tendency to rely too heavily on the support and ease with which things occur at the University, and I think the nature of my personality means I get away with being a little dependent now and then. I'm keenly aware of the fact that once I gain employment away from the University's external placement system I'll probably be forced into working more independently (even though I may still be a member of a team), thus developing greater confidence in my abilities. Having said this, I really enjoy being in academia and the skills I plan to develop in the future will certainly include teaching and research design, so as to improve my chances of a possible career in academia. |
