Voltigeurs (Left) -
Here we have a unit of 16 voltigeurs and their commanding officer.
These are the same as the standard infantry, but they have yellow epaulettes and blue legs.
Sharpe's greenjackets and light company skirmishers would go head to head with voltigeurs before the main bodies of infantry became involved in a battle. The greenjackets of course though had rifles, Voltigeurs like the rest of the French army carried muskets.
Voltigeurs were sent forward ahead of the main French attack to harrass the British lines and screen the main infantry advance. They were made up of the lightest and most agile men, as well as the best shooters.
