Hisoka's a fairly new shinigami, although it is not exactly sure how long. He passed the shinigami exam with 'flying colors,' with strong spiritual abilities. Hisoka is an empath, with abilities to sense another's emotions and thoughts, although in the anime, he was able to trace another's position by touching an object of theirs.
His motives for becoming a shinigami was discovering the reason that he died. He thought it was 'unfair' and tried to sneak into the gushoushin's database but got into trouble with Tsuzuki instead. He later remained a shinigami for revenge.
