| Merle The Cat Girl |
| Merle is a thirteen year old cat-girl. Since she was an infant, Merle has been part of the royal Fanelia entourage. She has always been Van's dearest and closet companion...and is quite protective and possesive of him. Merle doesn't like Hitomi very well, because she is afraid she will still Van away from her. But she eventually warms up to Hitomi. Merle saves Van and Hitomi several times. Its her love for Van that gives her confidence enough to do so. She even faced the Luck Soilders, Naria and Eryia. Seeing that Merle was a cat-human...they remembered their past and went off...letting Van live for the mean time. Merle is also good with young kids...ecspecially orphans. Thats because she is able to relate to them because she is an orphan herself. Knowing that Van loves Hitomi....she is the one that convinces him to let her know how he feels. |
| MY THOUGHTS ON MERLE Merle is considered to be Escaflowne's comic relief.... I used to be very fond of Merle...but now I don't like her as much as the other characters in the storyline. Don't get me wrong...Merle is an important character. (She saves Van and Hitomi several times...) But in my opinion, Merle isn't a very complex or exciting character. The one thing I do like about Merle is her possesive ways towards Van. It is very funny...ecspecially when it involves Hitomi. Van seems to be the only person Merle cares strongly for....but she does become friends with Hitomi. |
