| Van Fanel is the second main character of Escaflowne. He is fifteen years old and is the king of Fanelia. Van's parents are Goau Fanel and Varie....who is a draconean. (Dragon-god) They both died when Van was only five years old. He also has one older brother...Folken. Since Van is part draconean....he has the ability to sprout wings. However...most people consider it ugly and he usually keeps the secret from others. Van is the skilled pilot of the Gaimelf, Escaflowne. It is because of Van that Hitomi travels to Gaea. His unexpected trip to Earth (Mytic Moon) causes Hitomi to come back to Gaea with him. Van is a very complex and important character. His attitude towards his kingdom causes him to defend and avenge it at all cost. |

| MY THOUGHTS ON VAN I like Van very much. He is one of the best characters in the entire world of anime. Although he wasn't inteneded to be the main character...in some ways...he is the main character of Escaflowne. In Japan...he is also the most popular.... Van's personality is what makes him a great character. He is quite mature and serious....but he also has a sensitive side that he doesn't like to show. I believe Van likes Hitomi because she is the first human girl his age he has met. He is secretly fascinated by her abilities...and is hard for him to express his feelings for her. However...I also believe Van cares a great deal about Merle. He was her first friends...and she was his. Since they grew up together...they share a special bond. Van also looks up to Allen with much respect. But I think he sometimes gets alittle jealous of his abilities. |
