Danger Danger splashed on the Melodic Rock scene in 1989 when they released their amazing self titled debut album. After a series of lineup changes, the band is comprised of Paul Laine (vox), Bruno Ravel (bass) and Steve West (drums). Blending their more AOR roots with an edgy, modern sound, Danger Danger are stronger than ever. Those who dismissed them in the early 90's as "another hair band" better check the new incarnation of this band, which keeps getting better with every release. Return of the Great Guildersleeves Track by Track: Grind - A furiously addictive song that successfully injects late 80's party rock with a dose of modern arrangements. When She's Good She's Good - Just like for Four the Hard Way, the band has decided to re-record some tracks from the unreleased Cockroach album, this being the first two on this album. Very similar to the original, it has still been brought to new heights with much better production, sound effects and a menacing guitar solo by the unrivaled, and ex-Danger Danger axeman Andy Timmons. Six Million Dollar Man - A very modern sounding track, written by Laine, this is fast and heavy, delivering a good hook and melody line. She's Gone - This is a very 80's sounding rock ballad, in the style of "Don't Walk Away" from their classic debut. With excellent lyrics and music, this song will remind the listener of the glory days of the late 80's. Dead Drunk & Wasted - This is D2 at their best - a hook-laden song with quirky, party-themed lyrics and addictively crunchy guitar riffs. Somewhat similar to "Heartbreak Suicide." Dead Dog - This one is a bit moodier and darker, along the lines of Dawn. Not as melodic as the rest of the album, but still a very strong song. I Do - If you liked songs like "The Girl Ain't Built to Sleep Alone," you'll love this one. Paul sounds as close to Bon Jovi as he ever has, all the while retaining his own voicing and inflections. Great melodic riffs and harmonies. My Secret - I've been hearing people complain about this song and frankly, I can't understand why. It's a brilliant acoustic number, much like "Captain Bring Me Down." Paul has a great knack for introspective ballads, and although this is somewhat mid-paced, his writing abilities show through. Cherry Cherry - Deemed as a throwback to the late 80's sound, this song doesn't live up to it's hype. Sure, it's catchy and Bruno does sound pretty good handling the lead vocals, but it's not as classic sounding as it's been described. Good song, though. Get in the Ring - Again, slightly disappointing, given the way the band has described it. Not a bad tune, but the 80's comparisons are way-off. This is heavy, modern and dark - but in a good way. If pushed, this song could get airplay here in the States, given it's modern feel. Walk It Like You Talk It - Yikes! This, the second song from Cockroach, has been totally revamped. Gone is the slickness of the original version - and in it's place a sense of immediacy has been given to it. What a way to end an album! Final comments: All Danger Danger fans need this NOW. The band has certainly stepped farther away from their AOR beginnings, but don't let that scare you. This album takes off right where they left us at the end of Four the Hard Way. |
