An applicant for a professional pilot's licence is required to pass the following ground examinations at CPL or ATPL level as appropriate:

        Group 1 (Navigation)
•  Flight Planning and Flight Monitoring
•  Navigation
•  Instruments
•  Meteorology Theory
•  Meteorology Practical
•  Radio Aids
•  Human Performance
•  Signals
•  Radio Telephony
•  * for aeroplane: Aviation Law (Aeroplane), [two papers]
•  * for helicopter: Aviation Law (Helicopter), [two papers]

 

Ground Examinations

        Group 2 (Technical)
•  Engines
•  Electric and Automatic Flight
•  Loading
•  * for aeroplane:

- Principle of Flight (Aeroplane)

- Airframe Systems (Aeroplane)

- Either Aircraft Technical and Flight Performance for aircraft whose MTWA exceeds 5,700 kg; or Aircraft Type Technical and the appropriate performance group examination for aircraft whose MTWA does not exceed 5,700 kg.



* for helicopter:   

- Principle of Flight (Helicopter)

- Airframe Systems (Helicopter)

- Aircraft (Type)

The validity period of the results of the ground examinations of the respective group for licence issue is normally 12 months from the date of achieving a full pass. However, where the applicant is the holder of a Hong Kong CPL(A) the validity period of the results of the ATPL (A) ground examination is 7 years from the end of the year of the last validity date of either the Aircraft Rating of a multi-engined aeroplane or the Instrument Rating corresponding to that particular type, whichever is earlier.
