My Strategies

  • It is annoying to cook rice whenever you take a meal. Following way will
help you to save your time when you prepare meals.

    1. First, cook lots of rice at a time.(Amount for a week is reasonable.)
    2. Put boiled-rice in the plastic container
('Lock&lock' and 'Glad' are good to use).
    3. Then, freeze and keep them in a freezer.
    4. You can eat a rice meal warm over again by microwave range
      (2~3 minutes are proper).

  • In order to make Korean food, you often need 'anchovy stock'.
Making anchovy stock is also annoying and takes a lot of time.
So, I recommend you to use "Dasida" that is powder or thick gravy made of
anchovy or seafood. You can just melt or dilute those with water and boil.
You do not need any special skill and it takes only 2~3 minutes to do.
Once you make that stock, you can cook various kinds of food. For example,
    • Broth of noodle.
    • Basic stock for cooking soup[Kuk].

  • For eating nutritious food, I use some simple and fresh foodstuff such as
cucumber, lettuce, bean-curd, and fresh see tangle. Sometimes I mix a small salad
and sometimes make a lettuce(or sea tangle) wrapped rice. They are not only nutritious
    but also arousing appetite.
Egg and potato are also useful for single students. For instance, you are able to
use egg in various ways like scrambled-egg, steamed-egg, egg-fries, egg soup[Kuk],
    boiled-egg and so on.

  • When you are busy studying, you can utilize instant food that is not so harmful
ones like usual ramen. For example, you can quickly cook freezed-dumplimg[Mool-mandu]
by just boiling for a while(3~5 minutes). There are also well-made instant food
products in the market as well; 'Saengsaeng udong', 'Rang-myun', Seasoned-noodle
[Bibim-kuksoo] and so on. Using these products wisely, you can make up your meals rich.

Useful Tips

  • Add a pinch of raw rice to table salt to prevent it from getting soggy (Tip King, 2004).
  • When pan frying, always preheat the pan before adding the butter or oil (Tip King, 2004).
  • When freezing liquids, leave a half an inch headspace at the top of the container to allow for expansion.
  • To store bread , doghnuts, bagels, or breadsticks, wrap them airtight in a plastic bag and store them in room temperature or freeze them. The refrigerator will dry out these bread items.
  • Allow fruits, especially grapes, plum, and pears, to ripen at room temperature before refrigerating to inprove the flavor (Tip King, 2004).
  • Do not wrap foods containing natural acids, such as, tomatoes, onions, lemons etc., in aluminum foil. A chemical reaction caused by the combination of acid and the foil can affect the taste of the food, use plastic wrap instead. Salty foods can cause the foil to rust (Tip King, 2004).
  • Place a slice of white bread inside the cookie jar to keep cookies soft. An apple slice also is effective, but it can attract fruit flies (Virtuowl, 2003).
  • Never boil coffee since boiling brings out the tannic acid in the beans and makes it bitter (Tip King, 2004).
  • No more tears when you freeze onions for 5 minutes before chopping them (Tip King, 2004).
  • To get rid your any odors on your hands after chopping onions or garlic, rub moistened salt into your hands, then rinse with warm water and soap (Tip King, 2004).
