Definitions

  • A Suitability Class consists of a halter and lunge line class. It is only open to horses age 2 and under. Horses showing in these class may ONLY enter lunge line and halter classes in the rest of the show. NO mounted classes.
  • A Futurity Class is a class for horses age 4 and under. These horses MAY NOT enter any other mounted classes in the show. ONLY futurity classes. They may show halter classes and that's IT. This rule was broken the most last season so please pay attention to it.
  • For Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced Classes use your discretion as to what level your horse is at. Please be fair in your assessment. This is on the honors system. If problems arise the HWA reserves the right to define specific guidelines.
  • A Youth Class is a class for exhibitors under the age of 18. An Adult Class is a class for exhibitors ages 18 and over.
  • An Open Class is exactly how it sounds. Anyone may enter an Open class EXCEPT those horses entering suitability, futurity, or lunge line classes.)
  • A Junior Horse Classes are for horses ages 5-9.
  • A Senior Horse Classes are for horses age 10 and over.

What Classes Should I Enter?

Here are just a few concepts to consider when entering your horses. Knowing the rules of entering can be very confusing, but they are very neccessary.

  • Your horse may enter one of the following: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced.
  • Your horse may enter both Youth and Adult classes, but they must have riders that meet the age requirements for their respective classes.
  • Again, any horse entering suitability classes may not enter any mounted class during the show. Any horse entering futurity may ONLY enter classes labeled futurity in that respective show and the classes in the halter division.
  • Horses do not have to enter the same expertise level in each division. They can enter novice western pleasure, advanced barrel racing, and intermediate reining. (These classes are just for example.) The exception is horses entering futurity. They may enter ONLY classes labeled futurity in other divisions or your choice of classes in the halter division.
