~ The Adventures of Nancy ~
The New York Times ~ June 2, 1930

* Despite her ordeal, Nancy, who really loved the sea, made several sea-related movies *

~ Nancy and Law ~
" I've never been arrested for speeding. I'd like to be. I think it would be fun. I tried it once. I saw a copper and I stepped on the gas and shot past him. He chased me a few blocks and ran me into a curb. Gee, I was excited! But did that officer give me a ride in the patrol wagon ? Not on your life! He took one look at me and said, ' Hurry home little girl. It's getting late.' ' But, aren't you going to arrest me ? '" -- actress Nancy Carroll
Factoid : Not only did Nancy's second husband Bolton Mallory steal her heart, he emptied her pockets too! This information was revealed in court when Nancy obtained her divorce from him.
And...speaking of the Mallory divorce, Nan wasn't taking any chances, as this article from The Oregon Daily Journal reveals.
Carson City, Nevada 11/7/35
"Nancy Carroll, red-haired film actress and Bolton Mallory, a former magazine editor, were divorced for a second time in district court here Wednesday.
Disregarding the Mexican divorce won a few months ago by Mallory, Miss Carroll appeared before District Judge Guild to obtain a Nevada decree on grounds of non-support and cruelty.
Trial of the case, at which Mallory was not represented, required but a few minutes. Mallory, one-time editor of Life magazine married 14 year Carlota Lobato in Mexico last August after obtaining a Mexican divorce from the film star."
(Hmmm... A 14 year old ???? To think, his former step-daughter was only 4 years younger than his new wife! )
In the late 1920's Nancy went to the aid of another Irish New York actor when she served as a character witness at the trial of Paul Kelly. Kelly was charged with manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend Dorothy Mackaye's husband Ray Raymond, which occurred during a drunken brawl. Nancy's testimony however didn't help very much because Kelly was convicted and sentenced to prison. With time reduced for good behavior, he served only 25 months in San Quentin Prison, and upon his release, married Miss Mackaye.
