The Borderguards
The Borderguards
The Borderguards are a distant cousin of the Rebel Alliance. It was, in
fact, started by a group of Rebel Officers who specialized in hunting down
slavers. The coming of the Empire led to an increase of pirates, and other
scum due to an increased lawlessness in the galaxy. The spaceways certaintly
were not safe for honest travellers anymore. It was for this reason that
Commander Elias Barnes started the Borderguards. The Rebel Alliance backed
his initial commando unit, because the Rebellion was losing a lot of precious
cargo to pirates. Commander Barnes reasoned that if a commando team removed
the demand side of Rebel cargo, then supply would trickle off. This was easy
for the Rebel Alliance to swallow, as it is much cheaper to support troops
than it is fighter wings to hunt down all of the pirates.
The commando unit initially just went after important cargo buyers, but
as their success rate increased, they starting turning into a police force
rather than a commando assult force. Then, as the Rebellion absorbed more
ships from sympathizers, they could afford to start going after pirates. The
Borderguards adapted and moved to the Outer Rim territories, where their
justice was sorely needed. It was these outer worlds that are most heavily
scoured by pirates and slavers. It was during the move to the Outer Rim, that
the Borderguards became a separate entity from the Rebellion. While they are
still heavily funded and supported by the Rebel Alliance, an increasing amount
of funds are given through donations by planets which have been saved from
pirates by the Borderguards.
While there exists a "frontier" mentality among the Borderguards, there
also exists a strong military philosophy and command structure. The ranking
system of the Borderguards is identical to that of the Rebel Alliance:
However, the command heirarchy is split into two distinct divisions:
The Command Branch
Field Operatives
The command branch makes all of the long-term planning and decisions while
leaving the short-term orders and decisions to the field operatives. The
command structure is set up much like the historic Texas Rangers, where there
is a field operative assigned to cover a certain area. That operative makes
all of the decisions related to that area, whereas the command branch will
dictate which areas need operatives.
The Borderguard Command Headquarters exists at the Old Republic starship
repair facility, Boundary - 5 which is in orbit around the planet Ord Nasta.
Ord Nasta lies on the boundary between Wildspace and the Outer Rim
territories. Boundary - 5 lied dormant for hundreds of years before the
Borderguards finally settled in. Even now, the effects from neglect can be
felt as many of the systems are still inoperational, and the technology to
repair them has long since been forgotten. However, the Borderguards are
constantly bringing new technology to replace the ones which are lost to
disrepair.
There also exists a great many Old Republic artifacts which have been
left over at the facility during the time it was used. The Rebel Alliance
has stationed a scout crew, headed by the great historian Vorus Ullm to
catalogue the artifacts. The Rebel Alliance has also assigned a Starfighter
wing, the Outlaw Squadron, to defend Boundary - 5 from attack.
The Outlaw Squadron is under direct orders from Cmdr. Barnes, but is
headed by Captain Nooba Dunne, a Ho'Din fighter ace. The Rebel Alliance could
not station a full fighter wing, but it did place a good mix of fighters to
handle most situations. There are 20 X-Wings, 30 Z-95 Headhunters, and 10
Y-Wings stationed permanately in the Outlaw Squadron. But, recently, the
Alliance has also sent 2 prototype B-Wings on an experimental mission to see
how they handle against pirates. The Outlaw squadron has grown since the
Rebellion initially placed it at Boundary - 5. It has since added all of the
various combat ships which the Borderguards took from pirates during battles.
This Borderguard "Navy" consists of about 40 freighters and light combat
ships. It breaks down to include the following ships:
12 Skipray Blastboats (all with various modifications)
4 Assult Shuttles (again, heavily modified)
4 Sienar Fleet System Patrol Craft
20 heavily customized pirate freighters.
Also stationed at Boundary - 5 is a battallion of SpecForce Marines and a
battallion of SpecForce Heavy Weapons Specialists commanded by Col. Apone.
These military units are primarily in case of a direct assult on Boundary - 5.
However, since their arrival, they have also been training the Borderguards
in SpecForces ground assult tactics.
As for the rest of the personnel at Boundary - 5, they are made up of
the Borderguard High Command, support personnel, and refugees from slavers and
pirates who earn their keep by working for the Borderguards until they can be
suitably placed on a free planet. This major influx of displaced people has
started putting stress on the Borderguard support personnel. However, some of
the displaced people are rising to the occasion. Kyra Malloc, an ex-slave,
has become the outspoken champion for the entire body of displaced people.
She works with General Barnes to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
Boundary - 5 also fields the largest number of Borderguard field operatives
due to the close proximity to Wildspace and the Outer Rims. The total number
of personnal at Boundary - 5 runs roughly about 75,000 people.
