"Undergoing Treatment" - Duran Duran

The History...

Duran Duran was founded in 1978 by school friends Nigel John Taylor and Nicholas James Bates. They got the name from a character in the Si-Fi thriller "Barbarella". Next to join was Roger Taylor (none of the Taylors are related by the way!) who became the drummer. He was found playing in Birmingham, England with another Birmingham band. Next they found Andrew Wilson Taylor, who became the guitar player, through an ad in the newspaper. Last to join, but certainly not least, was poet and aspireing actor Simon LeBon. He was recommended to the band by a former girlfriend, who worked at the club where the band played, named Fiona Kemp. The band's first album simply titled "Duran Duran" was released in 1981, and introduced the "New Romantic" band to the world. Their second album "Rio" released in 1982 broke the band in America. Their third album "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" was released in 1984 and was followed up by a very extensive and grueling tour for "Rio" and "Seven.." combined called the "Sing Blue Silver" tour. It was during this period that Duran Duran were at their zenith. In 1985 the group split into two splinter groups..Andy And John forming "The Power Station" and Simon, Nick and Roger forming "Arcadia". It was around this time that rumors of the band's break-up began to fly. This was far from the truth, however, soon the band would never be the same. The group got back together in 1986 to do the theme song for the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill". This song, was to be their last as the original Duran Duran, for it was also in 1986 that Andy and Roger Taylor announced their departures from the band. When the dust settled, all that was left was Simon, Nick and John. They, however, determined to continue as Duran Duran released an album in 1987 called "Notorious" which was followed by the "Strange Behavior" tour. This was my first opportunity to see the guys in concert! "Notorious" was not met with much fan or critic approval. Many fans had become upset and left when Andy and Roger left. However, it was at this time that the band became familure with a very interesting and innovative guitarist from NYC named Warren Cuccurullo. Warrren began playing with the band and touring with them filling in for the hole left by Andy. The groups next two albums "Big Thing" (1989) and "Liberty" (1990) were not met with much acclaim either. As a matter of fact, the albums began getting exceedingly worse in the eyes of the critics. To give you an example, the vidio for the single that was released from "Liberty" was played only once (that I know of) on MTV, and then it was dropped. It was also during the time of "Liberty" that Warren (the guitarist mentioned earlier) became a full member of the band. Then along came 1993 and the release of the band's seventh studio album again titled "Duran Duran". It seemed as if the band had come full circle. This is the album fans affectionaltely refer to as "The Wedding Album" due to all the wedding photos of the parents of the band members on the cover. This album with it's hit singles "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" skyrocketed Duran back into the spotlight and gave them some much needed acclaim! The next project was an album of all cover songs called "Thank You" in 1994. This was an album that the group had wanted to do for a while, and unfortunately, again, in the eyes of the critics, it was a failure. But, Duran has always been a band who have not cared what the critics have to say about their work, as long as the fans and they are happy with it. They have always been survivors!

History Continues OR The Latest News On The Band!

In recent history, the members have all gone about doing their own things and working on their own projects. John Taylor founded and owns his own record company "B-5 By The Sea". He has released two solo albums "Feelings Are Good And Other Lies" and "Auto Didact"! Simon LeBon currently owns his own record company called "Syn Pro Tokyo" and has done a solo cover of "The Who's" 'Magic Bus' and participated in the recording of a song called 'Do That Dance' with good friend, Nile Rogers (of Chic). He was one of the last people to see the late Bernard Edwards (RIP), also of Chic. Warren has been buisy working on his two solo albums 'Thanks To Frank' (currently available via 'Rif Raff Distribution') and "Machine Language" which was just released May 20th, 1997 (also available via 'Rif Raff Distribution'). He has also been working with Nick Rhodes on a four part broadway 'tec-trip' musical called "Bored With Prosac And The Internet". Warren and Nick formed the group "TV Mania" to work on this project, and not much more information is available about it at this time, except that, all parts are currently done, and they are looking for a lable to distribute it! Currently, the band has released their ninth studio album called "Medazzaland". It was released October 14th, 1997. The first single from the album was Electric Barbarella which was released September 16th, 1997. The second single from the album was titled "Out Of My Mind" which was featured on the soundtrack to the Val Kilmer movie "The Saint". The video for that song was actually aired on VH-1!! YEA VH-1!!. A tour followed the release of "Medazzaland" October 14th, 1997 in the late fall of 97. I have also recently discovered that, all current material that is being released is being produced by "TV Mania" and Simon is being billed as associate producer of the 'Out Of My Mind' single via 'Syn Pro Tokyo'! Pretty intersting stuff huh? The band are also currently working without the support of one of it's founding members, John Taylor. John announced in Febuary of 1997 at a Duran convention in L.A. that he was leaving the band to pursue his own solo career. John and the band split with no ill feelings, and the other members totally understand and support his decision. I think Guert said it best when he said:

"I say the show must go on though. We've still got the Godfather of DD, Nick Rhodes and the most unreplaceable element, Simon. We can all be thankful for what 'he' has done for Duran Duran and that his departure was not brought on by tragedy. It's also a good thing they didn't name the band 'Taylor Taylor' because they are all gone now." - Guert

Good Luck to you John! I know I for one will be behind you 100%!! I will also continue to support Duran in any and all of their projects! There is an extra track for Medazzaland called "Sinner Or Saint" which can be found as the b-side to the European released "Out Of My Mind" single along with "Silva Halo", both VERY good tracks! (Shout Out Time) Thank you to Wayne for giving me the single, and the opportunity to hear those tracks!! Most recently, the band has decided to leave their record company Capital Records. They have also dropped their management company "Left Bank Management". Hopefully, this will prove a good move for the guys, and they will be able to continue thier work uneffected. Time will only tell with that. In the mean-time, the guys (through Capital) have released a CD called "The Essentials" which is a compilation of their older work and B-Sides of several songs. This album was released on April 7th 1998!

Here Is What The 'Essentials' Cover Looks Like!

Look for it! Duran Also Released A Compilation "Greatest Hits" CD Following In The Vein Of "Decade" Called "Greatest" With A Companion Videotape. This CD And Video Was (Again) Released Through Capital (With The Band's Participation And Imput) As Part Of Their Fulfillment Of Their Contract. The Album Cover Looks Like This:

Duran Followed Up "The Greatest" With An Extensive Tour Of Europe (The UK Mainly) To Promote The Album In The Winter Of 1998. This Included The Band's First Full Blown Internet Broadcast (Which I Got To See!) It Was FANTASTIC!! The Band's Tenth Studio Album (TENATIVELY) Called "Halucinateing Elvis" Is Due To Be Released Sometime In The Spring Of 1999 (Keep Your Fingers Crossed!). There Are Rumors That The Album Will Actually Be Called "Mars Meets Venus" Which In My Opinion Would Be A Much Better Title To Go With! I Hope This Rumor Is True! It Has Also Been Stated By Simon That The Band Hopes To Do A US Tour In The Summer Of 1999!! YEA!!!! *Big Smile* I Am REALLY Looking Forward To That!!
