A Small Biography Of Nick Rhodes!

He was born Nicholas James Bates to Sylvia 
and Roger Bates in Birmingham England June 8th, 1962. 
He and long time school friend Nigel John Taylor founded
the band together in 1978. Such was the beginning of Duran 
Duran (who were nearly called RAF!). Given that Nick founded 
Duran Duran when he was only 16 years old, this gave him 
little time to have experienced anything else.


He quit school at 16 to form the band (never having really 
liked school anyway) and only had two other jobs in his lifetime.
His first job was as an attendent at his fathers gas station 
(that lasted all of one day and he walked out). His second job 
was as the DJ at a local club in Birmingham called "The Rum 
Runner". This was the PERFECT outlet for Nick! It gave him the 
opportunity to be around what he loved (music)and also provided 
the perfect outlet for his new band!


He met and married JuliAnne Friedman (the daughter of a wealthy
Iowa businessman) August 18th, 1984. They had one child together,
Tatjana Lee Orchid Rhodes. He discovered and produced the album 
"White Feathers" for the band 'Kajagoogoo' which is a thing he 
said he would never do again because their hit "Too Shy" raced 
up the charts and knocked Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf" out of 
the top spot. 


Nick is a very artistic person, and he showed this when he 
released his own book of photographs called "Interfearence". He 
is a great patron of the arts, and was very good friends with 
the late Andy Worhol. Nick with his bandmates Simon and Roger 
got together in 1985 to form the group "Arcadia". Their album 
"So Red The Rose" was an ambiant collection of music that the 
trio had wanted to do for a long time. 


Quite different from Duran or it's sister splinter group "The
Power Station", "Arcadia" was not a tremendous commercial
success. However, they did manage to get a few hits from songs 
like "Election Day", "Say The Word" and "Goodby Is Forever".


His marriage to JuliAnne ended in divorce in 1993 after almost
ten years of marriage, but he soon began seeing an English 
cartoonist named Madaline Farley. The couple is still together, 
but have not married, and there have been no rumors to that 
effect yet. Currently, he is working on the release of Duran's 
nineth studio album 'Medazzaland' and the release of "Boared 
With Prosac And The Internet" with his side project "TV Mania". 


TV Mania is a side project that Nick is working on with his 
fellow Duran mate Warren Cuccurullo. They have created a four 
part 'Trip-Tec' opera that they intend to be made into a Broadway
play. The only information that is available about TV Mania is 
that all four parts are done,and that they are currently looking
for someone to release it.


Another interesting fact to note is that it is Nick who owns the
legal rights to the name 'Duran Duran' lock, stock, and barrel. 
The name cannot be used without his concent. I thought that was 
pretty interesting! I think he proved through his divorce from 
JulieAnne that he definately has a very good lawyer! *giggle*


That's about it for Nick in a nutshell for now! I am sure as time
marches on, there will be many events and changes in the life of 
this multi-talented,witty,intelegent, sophisticated synthisist!

Newsflash!

I have just heard that Nick is currently dealing with quite a 
situation. It seems that Julianne wants to move back to The 
States and take their daughter Tattie with her. This is very 
difficult for Nick considering that he loves his daughter very 
much and wants to spend as much time with her as possible. The 
custody hearing is scheduled for late June. All my love and 
support goes out to Nick, at this difficult time, and I hope all
the luck in the world is with him to win custody of his daughter!
