The following help sheet will give you the basic commands in communicating and moving on Sanctuary. It is by no means a complete guide to Sanctuary, but should help your first visit to be an enjoyable one
To access sanctuary, use either a mud client, such as simplemu or avplay, or telnet to quake.rdr.net port 3333.
Then follow the login screen exactly . Type New and then fill in the information. You will be asked for a nickname and a password. All information is kept confidential. If you enter a nickname and it says invalid password or something like that when you enter a password, this means someone else already has your nickname on Sanctuary and you will have to think of a new one for yourself. Once you are logged in as a new user, you only have to enter your name and password the next time you visit sanctuary.
When you come into Sanctuary, you will find yourself in a forest entry. If no one comes immediately to your aid, here are a few suggestions and tips to making your first few visits to Sanctuary stress free as possible.
Type: FAQ (this will prompt the sanctuary to give you a little fact sheet about sanctuary to read) You can type: help conduct (to understand the policies of the MUD concerning harassment, etc)
If someone is in the same room as you, you may talk to them by using an ' (apostrophe)or a " (double quotation) before your sentence. The ' or " is the say command. You can also just type the word say, in place of the ' or ".
For example
'hi I am new and I need help.
"hi, I am new and I need help
say hi, I am new and need help.
When you use these commands, your comments will be seen by anyone who is in the immediate area with you. To see who is in an area with you, type: glance
Tell is sending a private message to a person on the sanctuary. The person does NOT have to be in the immediate area with you. They can be anywhere on sanctuary and you will receive that message from them. It can only be seen by you, and the person sending it to you.
A sent TELL looks something like this:
(nickname) tells you "Hi, how can I help"
Respond by typing: tell (nickname) I am new here and need help.
Unlike ' or say command, tell can be seen by that person anywhere on sanctuary. They do not need to be in the same immediate area you are in. You can send a "tell" to anyone on sanctuary. Type who . This will give you a list of all the people who are presently on sanctuary with you. You can use the "tell" command to ask for help, most people will be glad to help you if they are not already preoccupied.
The tell command can also be used, even if someone is NOT on the mud at the time. For example, your friend is not around, but you remembered something you JUST had to tell them. You can send them a tell, and it will be stored until they return to sanctuary. The "tell" you sent them is stored as "rvoice mail".
If you have "rvoice mail", that is, people who have sent you messages using the "tell" command when you are not on the mud, you will be informed of such when you enter the mud. To access this rvoice mail, type: rvoice
"rvoice" mail will be stored on the computer until you choose to delete it.
There is a system of communication that allows you to talk with more than one person at a time on sanctuary, no matter where they happen to be. This system of communication is called Channels. Think of a CB radio, there are different channels for different needs or interests, on Sanctuary. For now, we will concentrate on the gossip channel.
Gossip is a channel used for general friendly chitchat, and for asking for help in using Sanctuary. You can access gossip by doing the following:
this command turns on the radio, so to speak.
gossip hello I am new and I need help
People who are tuned into the gossip channel will see that message broadcast and will respond to you, either by a tell or by gossiping back to you.
WARNING Some of the channels on sanctuary have intense conversations going on them. They may be graphic at times. You can tune out the channel by using the command: tune
For example: tune spoil out
However, before you start exploring, I would recommend that you anchor yourself first to the forest entry area by doing the following. If you get lost on your journeys, you can always return to the forest entry and start again on your adventure.
This saves the forest as a port for yourself to pop back to. If you are a Startrek fan, you might relate to a port in the same way as the teleport feature on the shows. You can can port to various parts of sanctuary by typing: port (name of place you have remembered).
Unfortunately, unlike StarTrek, you have to go to an area first, in order to use the "remember here" command.
For example: once you have saved the forest entry as a port, you can wander anywhere on Sanctuary. To return to the forest entry, just type: port entry.
type: remember here (place name).
You can get additional information at any time by typing the word FAQ or the word help.
To leave Sanctuary, type: quit
Have fun and remember that Sanctuary is indeed a safe haven for us all.
