Hi All I am in my second week of a course of Roaccutane. I am only on 20mg a day at present, Anyway I have found it has already affected my mood. I am getting some feelings of depression and am not fully awake until early afternoon. (Anyone who knows me may say o change there then!) I am in two minds whether to complete the course as my acne isn't that bad and I don't want to battle with depression over Xmas. On a more positive note I have seen a dramatic improvement, my skin is much clearer though I have a very dry face and lips. I have found that the booze dose cause a spot or two to emerge but I should drink less anyway so it is a good reason to cut down. I think I need a chat with my dermatologist.

This is to the posting below. LIsten; If you've had problems for years and nothing works, it may be time to try accutane. Yoiu mentioneed that its affecting your sel;f esteem, thats a definate indicatir that somthing has to be done, now! Ask your dermato ogist to percribe it now. I have been on it for 11 weeks and am very happy with the results, I can count on one hand the pimples left, these are small, non cystic, and are very dry,I expect them to be gone in a couple of weeks. Good luck! I know how much t sucks in a hasrcore royal way.

Hello, I have suffered with acne from the age of 12 and have been on azelex, retin-A, differin, benzalmiacin, and tetrecycline. None of these treatments have helped. The tetracycline eased my acne a bit while I was on it, but I suffered from frequent col s, and my acne came back worse than ever after I was finished with it. I think that I went through the whole tetracycline ordeal about 4 or 5 times. Well my acne is as bad as ever. I have it not only on my face, but on my back, chest, shoulders, and th ghs too. I am embarassed to wear tank tops or to go swimming in a bathing suite. I asked my doctor about accutane, but she was very reluctant to give it to me, stating that it was only used in cystic cases. Though I am still considering taking it, I wa very surprised about all of the negative feedback. I noticed in this forum that many of the unfavorable reports came from people who took the drug some time ago while the positive effects were reported by those who have just recently taken it. I am ver concerned about these reports, being that I have suffered head and neck trauma and thyroid problems; so I know how important and precious good health is. I also feel that self-esteem is something that we should all not be deprived of; and as long as I h ve acne I know that I will not feel good about myself. As you can all see I am a bit torn in my decision, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I also read that birth control pills may help acne, I am not sure if this is true or not. My endocro ologist who is doing a study on DHEA levels found that mine were a bit higher than average for my age. After some research, in short, i found that this was an important hormone in our bodies and high levels, especially in supplementation, may cause acne. Does anyone know anything about this? And are there any new acne meds. that are being tested with positive results? Thank You-Angela

I'VE BEEN ON ROACCUTANE FOR ABOUT 3-4 MONTHS NOW AND MY ACNE ON MY BACK HAS CLEARED IMMENSELY. I NO LONGER GET FACIAL PIMPLES ANYMORE. BUT I HAVE NO ENERGY, I'M SLEEPING ALL THE TIME. I'M THINKING ABOUT TAKING VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS SPECIFIC TO MY ENERGY OSS BUT MOST CONTAIN VITAMIN A AND E. ARE THESE HARMFUL TO THE ME OR REDUCE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE DRUG? I WAS ALSO TOLD BY MY PHYSICIAN THAT I HAVE AN 80% CHANCE OF MY ACNE NO RETURNING AT ALL, IS THIS TRUE?

Does anyone know is low dosage of accutane for a period of 2 months helps to prevent mild to moderate acne for long term? My derm. prescribed 40g a day of accutane 1 week, 20gm a day for the second week and finally 60gm a week for 1 month. Thanks

Thanks Gillian for a terrific site! I'm currently on my second course of Accutane and have found this site to be very helpful. This message is in response to the question posted on 11/21/98 about whether or not you should go on Accutane if you have mild acne. I think your dermatologist would probably be the best person to answer this question. However, if you've had acne for a lo g time, have been on many different acne medications and have accumulated scars as (well as general frustration), I think you should consider it. However, I don't think you should look at Accutane as a "cure" no matter how mild your acne is. I had mild/mo erate acne for 11 years before starting my first course of accutane 2 years ago. About 2 weeks ago, I had to start a second course of accutane because I was broken out in blackheads and cysts! When I started to break out again, I was angry and frustrated ecause the dermatologist I was seeing during my first course of Accutane kept telling me that Accutane was a "cure" in all but 10% of the cases. The dermatologist I am seeing now explained that 40% of Accutane patients require a second or third course of he drug and helped give me more realistic expectations. In the August 1997 issue of Postgraduate Medicine (my physician gave me a copy of this article), Dr. Ken Landow writes that "Acne can be realistically thought of as a chronic disorder somewhat akin to hypertension or diabetes, conditions requiring potenti lly protracted therapy." I don't know if this helps. Good luck in your decision making process!

Hello, This message is in reply to the question of the cost of Accutane in the United States. Though the price of Accutane probably varies from state to state, just to give you a rough estimate of the cost of this drug, I am paying $6.30 PER pill for 40 mg of Ac utane! That's roughly $378 a month. Believe it or not, this is the cheapest price I've found. If you live in a region of the country that has a Walmart Pharmacy, I'd highly recommend filling your prescription there. They are the cheapest place I've found. If you live up north, I'd suggest the K-Mart Pharmacy or Pharmor. Good luck!

Wow!!! I was so shocked to hear about the girl on 200mg's of Accutane! Is that really right? That seems SO high! I am on 40 mg a day and its been 7 weeks. So far so good! It got really bad the 2-3 week and has tapered off since. Now my skin is not that dr , and very few zits. When they do appear they come and go quickly within 2-3 days! Amazing how this stuff is working! I felt a bit deppressed in my 2-3 week. But I attribute it to my acne getting worse than ever not the medicne itself! But, now I look bac and am so grateful I stuck it out! I am really beginning to see improvements right now! I also am using Neutrogena's oil free acne wash, which I think is helping AND I am using just a tiny bit of 5% Benzoyl Peroxide on the zits I do get, at night! I thin the Benzoyl Peroxide helps tone down the redness and dry up the one's that come to the surface! I love what the one girl said before about her skin throwing up in the first phase of this medicine!!! I agree! My Mom keeps saying the Accutane is getting al the POISON out!!! YEAH!!! So keep your chin up and thank you to the girl who wrote in before me. Your story was one I think a lot of us can identify with. I just hope your not on too high of a dose. My brother already and successfully has taken Accutane nd he was on 80 mg's a day. He is 6'3 and I don't know about average weight. I know the medicine is suppose to go by body weight, right? Could that be a mega overdose, 200 mg's??? I'm just concerned...Anyway...I love hearing about other people's stories. check this site everyday I can. Talk to you again...

Everyone on accutane who is depressed please, please hang in there. I have gone through it myself, though I am more likely to attribute it to the acne than to the medicine. Before I had acne I was never depressed. It's hard, I know, but don't give up.< r>

Hello. I have many friends who have been on it and when describing their treatment the word miracle usually comes up. I have been on 200mg a day (which is a lot more than most peoples' letters I've read, but my doctor said that the higher the dose the le s likely a recurrence is after treatment) . I am on my 17th week. And just today my doctor added another 4 to my 20 weeks, since my face still has not cleared. I am getting the monthly tests, assuring the 200mg is not overkill. I admit it was a little dau ting to have to sign all those forms(at least here in the US) that I wouldn't get pregnant. The first 10 weeks of treatment were really rough. I call that the stage where my face threw-up. It was like anything that had ever been under my skin came to the urface. It was the worst my face has ever been. It was also right when I was starting college, so it made it really difficult to meet people when the first thing I wanted to tell them was that my face wasn't usually like that. It was also hard because my face was soo dry I couldn't wear any makeup, so I couldn't hide how bad it was. Almost everyone I've seen go through accutane went through the same thing. And now their skin is PERFECT. So I have hope, except my acne is just now starting to really improve and I still have cysts. I don't have any really bad side effects- at least none unusual. I just started to get the itchy eyes. My lips I can just sit and peel off- it seems that everyone experinces this. I haven't worn lipstick since I started. I am on perscription grease called aclavate, which doesn't really help all that much. I am also taking vitamin E for the lips, which also doesn't seem to be helping either. My face just stopped being so dry so I am starting to wear makeup again and the topical A elx, which doesn't dry my face out like the Benzoils. I can't imagine putting oxy or anything that would dry out my face. My doctor also recommended not taking multi-vitamin pills becuase they contain vitamin A, and you don't need anymore vitamin A when y u are on Accutane. I don't understand why some people talk about drinking more water. Is this to help with the dryness- because usually water is too help the kidneys and Accutane isn't processed through the kidneys but through the liver. If anyone could a swer this question I would appreciate it. Anyone who is considering Accutane, don't forget about the cost. I am taking 5 5dollar pills a day for 24 weeks. That adds up real quick if you don't have percription coverage. good luck. Beth

Hi. This is to Chelsie. I too was very concerned when I read that instruction about waiting until the 2nd or 3rd day of your period to start accutane. I wasn't going to wait even a minute more than I had to!! So I asked my dermatologist. The ONLY rea on they put that on there is because they want to make sure you're not pregnant. Now, when I told my dermatologist that I had never even held a boy's hand and wasn't planning on having sex until my wedding night, she said go ahead, start, and I took my f rst 20 mg as soon as I got home. She said that there isn't anything magical about waiting until your period. So, if you're not sexually active, you can start now with no qualms about it. But if there's a chance you're pregnant, you should wait. Hope t is helped. :)

I did not wait until a cetain day in my menstrual cycle. I did not read about that. I don't have any problems. I got my period just like suppose to. Not having any problems. The last few people who wrote in really dumped on Accutane. Sorry to hear the neg tive replies. This medicine does wonders for those of us who find it important enough. I have had no problems with depression or suicidal thoughts. No libido changes. No serious complications. All the symptoms I have had are bearable compared to the acne. I know others who have successfully taken this medicine and are fine. I suppose everyone's body may react differently...but a particular symptom may also be a predisposition that the Accutane may bring out. For those of you hanging on to the hope that Acc tane will make your acne better...keep hanging on...your not alone and its worked for many others. I hope to see more positive comments on this page. Its meant to be a supportive atmosphere. Thanks -Accutane user in 7th week on 40 mg a day!

I brought home my first prescription of accutane and was dissapointed to read that you have to wait till your 2nd or 3rd day of your menstrual cycle to start it. If this is true i will have to wait a whole month! I've already waited three months and iam r ady to start it now. My question is have any other females taking this product started it at any other time besides the 2nd or 3rd day of their menstrual cycle? And why does it tell you to start it then? Thank you for any answers to my questions =)

Hi all! First of all I have to say I experienced the worst sideeffects possible from accutane. It was depression, deeper than you ever can imagine. Never had it before. I couldnt cry before but now it is very easy to cry I must say. And I lost my hair. (n ne of my relatives are bald). Im depressed today too but the worst seems to be over(suicidal thoughts). I have searched on the net what sideeffects people have experienced and some have experienced horrible ones. Hairloss, lowered testosteron levels, decr ased libido, nightmares, problem to sleep, depressions, suicidal thougts yes the list goes on. My recommendation to you all:DO NOT RISK IT!!! The pimpleproblem is so small to what you can experience instead! I was too very positive to the drug at first. I wrote here somewhere how happy I was that my pimples dissapeared and now I have to build up my life again somehow. Good luck to you all!*****************I also would be interested in other people losing their hair on accutane, so email me****

I wrote the message below, but I forgot to ask one other question: Since my acne is not as severe as some other cases, is it more likely that Accutane would give me long lasting results and in a sense "cure" me? I ask this because it seems that many oth r people have had to go on a second dose, but it also seems that their acne was kind of severe to start with.

I have mild acne, that is my acne only consists of blackheads and some oily skin in areas - no actual pimples. However, like many acne sufferers, I am greatly stressed by this and have already visited one dermatologist a few times, but I did not like the doctor and the treatments I tried (Triaz gel, minocycline, Differin Gel, Retin-A Micro) did not help an inkling. I want to go on Accutane, but is it reasonable for a doctor to prescribe this for me? Or should I say, is it possibe for me to even get the edication? Also, does Accutane clear away existing blackheads?

Hello All, I used Carmex (in the tube) whilst on Accutane. It worked great. It worked even better on my lips (in the corners especially) when I applied it many many times throughout the day. This might even mean every 20 minutes or 1/2 hour or when li s start to feel the slightest hint of dryness. I am finished with Accutane and I must say that for the most part it helped, however, it still has not helped as much as I expected compared to my first treatment several years ago. The latest treatment was or 5 months and I hope it improves more. I did find a help with the return of the oilyness. My derm told me that the oilyness would probably return about 2 to 3 weeks after the treatment. He was right. Last July (during my treatment) I read an article in one of our local papers about a Lady who is an accupuncturist. She also consults people and mixes chinese herbs. In her article she said she had tried antibiotics, etc. (before Accutane existed)with no luck. She said she cured her own acne at about ge 32. I waited until a couple weeks after my treatment and went to her for a consultation. She mixed up a skin tonic for me. I have been taking it for a little less than a month. She also put an herb in there for depression. I have been a happier per on and the severe oily skin has vanished. I mainly wanted to take it to see if the herbs could help maintain the acne free results of Accutane. I do expect the acne to return if I do not try something that works from the inside out. I take about 3/4 of a easpoon in the morning and the same at night. She recommends me to take it half hour before or one hour after my meals so that food will not interfere with the herb granule conentrate. There are several ways to take the herbs. I prefer drink the herbs s a tea by placing them into a cup of water heating it up and steeping it for 15 minutes. Some other choices I have is to put the herbs in a capsule or mix into food. I don't mind the healthy food taste of the herbs in the tea. I asked her to write down the herbs. I am not sure of the spelling as I have not looked them up yet. It looks like Leonorus, Carthamus, Eviobotrye, Rehmannia, Tang kuei, Astragalus, mastic. I am only sharing this info in case someone wants to check into these herbs or maybe see an herbalist near you. Oh yes, and the cost. It cost me 35 dollars for a consultation and 17 dollars for about half a month of herbs. Doesn't look like I will need to consult much more but she did tell me to keep her apprised of any changes. So it will be costing me about 35 dollars a month. Best wishes to all

First of all, congratulations Gillian on that Website. Good work. I just would like to tell everybody that the biggest mistake of my life was to start taking Roaccutane only at the age of 33. If I had known that treatment before, I would have had a better and happier life. I have been suffering from modest to severe acn since I am 16. Well, I took the usual stuff, antibiotics, creams, lotions and so on. Antibiotics help, yes, but as soon as I stopped treatment, the acne came back, often more severe than it was before. Thanks to a young dermatologist in Belgium, I heard f Roaccutane. i just started my 5th week and the results are marvellous (40mg/day). All whiteheads, cysts and all the annoying stuff have completely gone (the first two weeks I also experienced a worsening of my acne). But then, what a relief, before I ha to wash my oily face 3 times a day and my hair every day. Thanks to Roaccútane, my skin feels so comfortable, no oil, no more washing. The side effects are ok, just dry lips (with a lipstick you survive). No fatigue, no muscle pain, nothing). If you suff r from acne, I encourage you all to undergo that treatment. Don't take antibiotics. It wreaks havoc to your liver, tires you and the acne will come back. And you are always tired. Think of it!! Good luck to you all Michael

To the 18 year old guy who wrote in asking about the blood, discharge and pain in bladder. You need to see a doctor. You may just have a bladder infection or you may have a sexually transmitted disease (VD). Gonorrhea or Chlamydia are my best guess! Pleas go get checked...I don't think this is related to the accutane.

I am a 18 year old male who has also discovered the 'wonders' of Roacutane and am pleased to say that its slowly getting there. But at the same time, people have to realise that life isnt as rosy as it seems. There are a few things that have me extremely orried and i'd extremely appreciate peoples responses. To make this simple, the symptoms i personally have experienced are: -small amount of liquid discharged from the penis. -very small amount of blood discharged also. -tightness of the bladder. -and burning sensation when passing urine now i'm not sure if i'm just a rare case, but i'm not going to ignore it. If there are other cases like me out there but are afraid to talk, dont be. If left, these symptoms can have serious effects afterwards. I would also like to hear from males who have experienced what i have experienced and am still experiencing. yours sincerely, a concerned Roacutane user.

Wonderful job Gill. I read the guestbook with great attention. It's a wonderful help ! I've now been on Accutane for about 5 months. End of the year I'll quit this medicine. I've had nodulo-cystic acne end of June due to exam stress and vitamin overdosis (that's what the doctors call it :) I've been struggling for four years now with this shitty disease and I hope future will bring more results. Accutane works fine , I have quite a bit of a rash on my hands and feet but that's all (the usual side effects not included). It works rather good, no spots any- more, but the nasty thing about cystic (and not only cystic acne) is the scars you're left with. My face is red, as red as it can be, and there isn't much improvement to see. People told me it would improve after I stopped takin' Accutane, but I'm not sure. I think it'll take 6 months-1 year to have once again a clear face. Does anybody know if scars improve after your Accutane treatment or any other methods to improve it? Thanks in advance and don't give up, I know support for this is hardly to find in this egotripper's world, but one day you will be happy and shiny again, so keep takin' pills and it'll work out fine!

Jessica: I am a test case for waxing while on Accutane.I should have known better! Imagine pressing duct tape onto the outer layer of an onion and then ripping... Because my skin is so dry and "papery" (but clear!) from the medicine, the wax pulled off sm ll patches of the top layer of skin! Talk about pain! And of course, the areas are red, obvious, and not healing up quickly. Based solely on my (stupid) experience, I would recommend avoiding waxing while on Accutane.

Hi there. I am in my 15th week of treatment and hopefully only have 8 weeks left now. I would just like to say to all of you who are in the early part of your treatment don't expect too much too soon. I know that for some their acne has cleared in a matter of a ew weeks. On the packet it says that you should expect your acne to get worse for the first 2 WEEKS, for me it took over 2 MONTHS before it stoppped getting worse. It has since levelled off and gradually some previously patchy areas started to heal and start to look better. Even with this gradual (slow) improvement I still have outbreaks which take time to heal. I am hoping that the last 8 weeks will continue this improvement. The side affects are very annoying but I know that in the long run it wil be worth it. My particular affects have been the usual dry skin, dry lips; but what has been particularly hard to put up with has been muscle aches in my left leg which I must have had for about 8 weeks now. I have to take ibuprofen every night before I go to bed so that I can actually go to sleep and my leg also gets painful during the day. I try not to take any in the daytime as too many can be bad for you. I was on 40mg for the first 11 weeks but have recently been put on 60mg as my skin was not loo ing very good(worse than when I started). Since I have been taking the higher dose I have found it very hard to concentrate (has anyone else experienced this) which is very bad as I have important work to do towards my a levels at the moment. I also get very tired and often need to rest in the afternoon. I have lost weight about one stone in weight which is not good as I was not that heavy to start with (11 stone 6ft heigh). I have also recently been going through days when I get really depressed and espair that why is it me that has to go through it. I expect everyone goes through these phases. Luckily I am feeling a bit more positive now and just writing this helps. Anyway enough of my own problems I just want to re iterate the point that you are not alone and if you think that roaccutane isn't working ( as I did for a long time) give it time it affects different people in different ways and some just need longer to get to that day when you can wake up and finally not have to worry about what you ight see when you look in the mirror. Good luck and any correspondence or questions I would be happy to try and help if you e mail me.

Thomas: I have also been told by my dermatologist to wait one year before having any laser work done. In fact, the laser clinic refuses to treat anyone who has been on (Ro)accutane in the last year. Apparently, the body needs a full year to return to its ormal healing ability. (Poor ol' bod!). Attempting any procedure (resurfacing, hair removal) too soon could backfire. Hope this helps.

hi all ! in reply to my fellow brit, thomas -i am currently on 60 mg accutane a day - and i also drink profusely ( not as much as before ). maybe its just a limey thang :) i havent had hangovers any more than normal. side effects - all the usual, dryness, tiredness etc. I found the thing that made my lips fine was blisteze cream. i reccomend it to our american cousins, if they can get it out there. *depression* was really, really bad for a while, but the alcohol helped :) just fine now :) if anyone is having a hard time, *talk to someone*, on the subject of depression generally - don't let it beat you - things will always get better, trust me. i was so unhappy for so long, but college gave me a new start, and things are looking up at last. and now, a bit of gloating. i get my accutane totally *free*, as i am under 19 and in full time education. dont you just love the nhs ? my hair is nicer now, and i don't get dandruff anymore. there seem to be a lit of scare stories around, but, as i watch my face clear up, the side effects are well and truly put in perspective :) thanks for a great site. parhum

I think that looking back, roaccutane was a last ditch attempt by the doctors to cure what was a problem that got to out of control, to quickly. They started me off on the highest possible dose for my body weight, is this normal? IM coming into the last m nth or two of a seven/eight (can't remember) course of this roaccutane stuff. My problem isn't Acne itself but more the scaring left behind by the countless spots, blemishes and other red nasties that have plagued my body for as long as I can remember. I an't actually remember what my poor body looks like without them. They seem to have become an in built part of "me" for as long as I can remember. After years of trying many drugs they finally referred me to a specialist. This was the start of this year. At the moment they are trying to get my body to stop the production of spots before they can cut the scars away with laser treatment. One question that comes out of all of this is why I have to wait for a year before they can laser them. Does anyone else know? I certainly don't and the specialist gave me a very vague answer to that question. As far as side effects go, I've had quite a little list, not nothing serious but I've had dryness of lips and mouth (Cured by lip grease and the standard issue moisturiser), flaky skin (see above), bleeding fingers (too much typing, cured by reducing dos ), Split ears (Odd one from taking my crash helmet on and off to much when riding my bike), Mood swings (getting worst as we speak), some VERY bad depression cycles (not sure whether this is pills or just my mental state), arthritic pain (in all joints, s ecially when siting in chairs for long lectures), not getting a cold (this is a GOOD thing that I noticed, because of the way the pills work there is no moisture left to bung your nose up so apart from a cack feeling it's the best a cold can do). The alcohol subject come out a lot on this page and I have to say that I drunk like a student (a lot) for the entire length of the course. We're talking 15 whiskies and a few beers on a night out. IM not suggesting that everyone else go and drink like a ish, but from personal experience it had not one bad effect from any angle, the hangovers were the same, the amount of booze consumed was the same, maybe it's just me, that's my experience, that's all. Looking at the many people on this list (most must feel like me) it's quite nice to have a place like this, even near the end of the course, there's a lot of ground I still have to cover, no one will give me a straight answer when I ask if IM scared for ife (I have a feeling that means YES) and my general depression tends to get worst by the week. I'll get through it though, there have been reports of other people committing suicide over this issue. Not me, I enjoy life too much, IM not going to let this beat me. It's the only part of my life that I can't control. IM determined to beat it, more determined than anything else in my life I will beat this thing down and I know IM going to beat it every time my mates and me get together in the pub and have a f w drinks, a few drunken songs (Wonderwall by Oasis), A group toast and a quiet feeling of contentment that maybe one day, I'll be able to go swimming again without small children staring and pointing…

Hi Everyone!!! I just wanted to comment on a few people's question's. I am in my 5th week. I am on 4omg's a day. My acne has improved but then can break out horribly on occasion. Right now I've decided to use either my benzoyl peroxide or the Benzomicin a night. This, it seems, is helping with the redness and the big one's that hurt. Although i am getting less and less big one's now. It just seems to get rid of the inflammation. I figure if the Accutane is working from the inside out than why not help fro the outside as well! I am only putting this on very lightly at night and then during the day I am using a moisturizer..right now I am trying Lubriderm. Someone had made the comment about not getting their period. I seem to have skipped mine as well. Some ne else commented about having really weird dreams at night...me too! So we are not alone!!! My biggest gripes about this medicine is the back pain and the tiredness I feel. Otherwise its not too bad! Type to you again soon!

Lots of people seem to be asking about benzol peroxide, which is the active ingredient in Oxy10 and most over-the-counter acne products. (If only all of us were so lucky to be helped by those.) Now, I haven't asked my dermatologist about this, but my gue s is this: Accutane is incredibly drying to the skin, right? So is benzol peroxide. That's probably the main reason why dermatologists don't specifically tell you to use topical medications along with the accutane, because all that dryness would harm y ur skin. Now, knowing all this, I still used Oxy10 every night for about a week, and that was the week that my skin looked best. I could really tell that the "bleaching" action was occurring. Most of the red spots were almost totally faded. However, I stopped because my face got so incredibly dry. For a couple nights I used vaseline on my face as I was instructed, but I could swear that just made it worse. Also, the red marks came back. I asked a pharmacist about moisturizer and she recommended Euce in, which is a whole less greasy. I still use Oxy10 sometimes. But I would advise everyone to ask their dermatologists about this. I don't know if I'm harming my skin or not. Probably. But acne causes a great deal of irrationality, I've noticed.

This is to the girl who below wrote about not seeing improvement after six weeks. You have to remember thatit's a lot harder to see improvement when you agonize over you're face on a daily basis. In the same way you can't see youraself grow but a relative who you haven't seen in a year might exclaim how tall you are! The drug is probably already working but you won't let yourself see it. Besides, the drug works differently with everyone, one mans one month cure might take three in someone else. Just hang n there, I know how much it sucks, but things get better! On another note, does anyone have any info on how to improve blemish marks? Benzoil peroxide helps some people say, someone asked earlier on if its safe to use with Accutane but no answer was poste , what the deal? Any answer would be beneficial as I am sure this is a common problem! Thanks.

Hi all, I'm in my second month of Roaccutane, and I've been spot free since the first couple of weeks, the side effects have been nothing more than the usual dry lips and flaky skin. To answer a couple of questions for others, I don't drink alcohol, but I don't know if this helps, here in England, we are warned about mixing alcohol and roaccutane, but other countries don't carry this warning on their prescription. Also, I've noticed that blackheads don't seem to come back after I've sqeezed them out. Good uck everyone !

Hi guys. I have a question for everyone out there. It seems like from reading the postings on this page that nearly everyone stopped breaking out after only a month of accutane. Lucky you guys. In four days I'll have reached the six-week point, and I'm still breaking out. I'm assuming (though with much doubt) that my skin is a little better than it was before, because people tell me it is. My dermatologist said it was showing some improvement, and one girl who didn't even know I was taking medication or acne told me how much better my skin was looking. Has it taken longer than four weeks for any of you to stop breaking out? Were any of you who had to wait longer for that to happen still successfully "cured" by accutane? I'm getting a little worried here.

This is to Sarah - age 17, I like you started suffering from acne at a very young age(12yrs). I first went on Roaccutane at the age of 17 for 4 months. I had an excellent response and was acne free until 3 years ago.Again the acne was cystic and severe wi h extreme oiliness of the skin. I tried various treatments again including Dianette, all to no avail. I was referred to the dermatologist who prescribed Roaccutane.I have now been on this since the middle of September and have until January to go.I would ike to stress that I had no hesitation, doubts, or misgivings about going on this drug again. Since I have been on it the side effects are minimal and expected i.e dry lips, nose etc.More importantly my skin is oilfree and spotfree, and has been since the middle of October. In my opinion these side effects are worth suffering in order to get rid o this awful affliction.None of the side effects are as bad as having to live with acne day in day out. All I can say to you Sarah is please go to your Doctor, get a referral to a Dermatologist and restart the Roaccutane. This disease is soul destroying and the longer you live with it the more damage it will do to your confidence and self esteem - it's not w rth it especially whren there is no need to suffer. Don't waste anymore time!

I was on Accutane about a year ago for the first time and I am now about ready to start my second prescription of the Accutane. I saw a slight improvement during the first course of the Accutane, month by month it would get better and finally towards the end of my six month treatment it was nearly clear with the exception of some blackheads and surface scars. Anyways, about two to three months later it started to come back slowly. It is now a year later and my acne is worse than it has ever been. Worse that even before my first course of Accutane. I will be start -ing my next course in about a week after the test results are in. I am hoping this time it will be a cure. Life is so difficult with this disease. To anyone who is skepticle about trying Accutane, just know that even though some dermatoligists claim that this drug is a cure, it is not! More likely than not, the acne will come back and a second course is needed. The dryness is tollerable, much better than the acne but what I find to be the worst is the consistant blood tests. The blood tests are every two weeks at first and then lessen to about every six weeks, these tests are required if you are on Accutane as well as a monthly pregnancy test for females. So it's a lot of poking, priking, dryness, and money for no garuanteed permanent results. I would just recommend trying everthing else first and if you still have acne than the it is worth trying Accutane.

Wow, I was amazed to see the number of stories people wrote in here, it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I'm now 19 but went on Accutane for the first time when I was about 16 or 17. It worked wonders the first time and the results lasted for about year. I had acne on my face and back and it cleared it right up. I was so impressed and thought that at the time, it was the solution. However, about a year later my skin started acting up again and pretty soon I was back to my old self ... the way I as. So, I tried some other oral and topical treatments that didn't work so well. I again went on Accutane and the wonderful results lasted for only a few months. My skin is once again breaking out quite badly and I have tried some more oral and topical treatments which haven't worked. I am in a debate weather to go on Accutane again for a number of reasons. I couldn't stand the side effects. I was on quite a high dosage and my lips were aweful! They got really dry and would split in the corners ever time I opened my mouth. Vaselline helped a bit but not completely. Then I wasn't really able to wear my contacts like most people. It was irritating but I lived with it for the few months. I also had a couple of nose bleeds, nothing serious and it pa sed. Now, I'm not really sure about other people, but I did find that I missed my period (which is quite regular) for a couple of months and my hair would fall out. Neither one a major concern 'cause it was a nice break and I have a lot more hair. :) have also heard of this medication causing sterility. I'm not too sure about this and am almost positive that this is just a rumor but still something to consider if I go on it a third time. I must be honest that I stopped taking the medicine after abo t 4 months the second time 'cause I couldn't deal with the side effects. It's hard dealing with acne at any age, but especially as a teenager. Sometimes the results outweight the pains you go through and that is almost enough for me to go on Accutane a hird time. I'm lucky though, most people have written in here that it is expensive. Living in Canada, we have OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) to cover the costs. Even if I had to pay, I would probably still have gone on it the first time. I guess I have some mixed feelings about the drug, but it's nice to know other people out there have gone or are going through the same thing and know where I'm coming from.

Hi I am in on my second Roaccutantreatment after being dissapointed after my skin turned back to its "normal" greasy self again. My doctor tells me that the drug is suppose to give permanent results so this time I will stay on the tratment for six months. I m kind of an expert when it comes to dryness. Eyes first - the tear-substitute works wonders. Forget the contacts but then again - who needs them with all the cool options of glasses. Lips - I use a cream from Elisabeth Arden called "Visible Difference - ight Hour Skin Protection". It is the best I have tried so far (and I have tried alot since Roaccutan makes my lips bleed). The down side is the price but it lasts for the whole tratment. Face and other dry parts of the body - My dermatologist writes me a prescription of Essex- lotion that contains 20 procent Propylenglycoses, which is super. After using a mild childrens-soap I just drain my face with the lotion, whereafter my face is ready for all the make-up I want to use. The best part is that the make- p stays on the whole day. Roaccutan is Gods gift to me although it gives me spooky nightmares. Has enyone else experienced that ? My doctor has not ever heard about that sideeffect. Keep on lubricating

Just starting my tenth week. Things really seem better. The side effects have lessoned and I have no new breakouts. My face is pretty clear with a couple scars still fading. I am not sure how much longer I will be on this drug. I am guessing 12 more weeks I wish I would have tried this ten years ago. I always assumed my acne wasn't severe enough. I will be glad when it is over. I am always so thirsty. The guy that wrote before me was right about the water. The more you drink the better you will feel. I wi h everyone Good Luck with this drug, May your side effects be few!

Well, I have just past four months now, and the dermo has said that I should continue for the next 8 weeks, and that should be it - I can't wait!!! Only problem, it that it will be second week in Jan 1999, so I will be having a sober New Year (still it will be worth it in the end!!) I am thankful that my side effects whilst on Roaccutane have been fairly mild in comparison to some people, and I have managed to accumulate some tips which helped, and continue to help during my treatment, which you may or may not find useful, Hopefully ou will - here goes ... Washing - in the morning, and at night - don't overwash whilst on Roaccutane - the skin will just become over-dry and that will not be any good in the long run. Occasionally if the skin gets too dry, try washing with something like E45 wash, or if necessa y, don't wash for that particular morning/evening - the skin will settle down by the next time to wash it. Boots do a good face wash (No. 17 range I think - Gentle Soap free facial wash - no irritation/minimal dryness so far!!) Moisturisers - The best bet is to find a non-comedogenic product (non-pore blocking) this does not necessarily mean oil free, as there are some products that are not oil based but CAN still block pores. During treatment, the skin can become sensitive to roducts that previously it would happily tolerate - best bet to avoid perfumed products - I currently use Almay Step 3 for Dry Skin (Hypo-allergenic, non-comedogenic, dermatologist and clinically tested, perfume and colour free - lovely and rich, yet ligh !!) Shaving - Yep, mainly a guy thing, once Roaccutane has started to work properly shaving becomes much easier than before, less bumps and cuts - best advice use a wet shave, I use Aveda shave cream. Be aware that most high-street shaving products contain so p and perfume, and can prove irritating to the skin - remember to moisturise afterwards!!! Water - Drink loads!! It cannot be repeated enough, you will know when you have not drunk enough by your urine, and your general well feeling. An easier method of ensuring a greater water intake, is to substitute your usual cups of tea/coffee with water - add a slice of lemon/lime to the glass to add some variety, and prevent water 'boredom' (when you start dreaming of glasses of Coke!!) Good Luck to all with your treatments, let me know if you have any other tips that can alleviate the troublesome side effects of this powerful drug. Love, Ace. XXXX

Hi all ! I'm into my second month of Roaccutane now, 60mg/day and clear of spots. Also the blackheads on my nose have cleared quite well, I had to squeeze them out, but they don't return once I've removed them ! I'm still only getting the dry lips and flaky skin, which is easy to combat, so all is going well. I'll write again soon, good luck everyone !

I am responding to a couple of the latest postings. To the person who asked about the return of oily skin and blackheads, I have had the oiliness return as well as some blackheads and little white bumps. I was really kind of annoyed because I loved actua ly having to use moisturizer while on the accutane. I have been off of the accutane for over six months and while I am not as oily as I was prior to treatment, it still has returned to some degree. My dermatologist has me using benzomyocin(sp?)and azelex gain. I am wondering though if I am having a reaction to products that I am using in my hair. Before accutane I used no styling products in my hair as I was sure that they would probably aggravate my acne. Then because my hair became so dry with the medic tion(and still is a bit)I started using all sorts of junk in my hair. I am going to try to not use anything again and see how that works. For the girl who posted anonomously and is so upset over her appearance and worrying about scars, I know exactly how you feel. I had perfect skin for the longest time until stress and hormones took over and nearly destroyed me. I remember exactly how it eels to wake up and not want to look in the mirror and cry every day for about two years. I stayed in almost all of the time and kept my appartment very dark. I never looked people in the face and avoided going out like the plague. I was literally obsesse about my skin and my appearance. Some scarring still remains on my face. The accutane helped a bit with that and my dermatologist said he was going to start to give me really light peels(I'm not sure when he is going to start but I am going to ask him ne t time I go). He said that he was going to get rid of all of it. It's weird - some days they look worse than others. I just hope that I do not get a reoccurance of the cystic acne that I had. My life since taking accutane has changed so drastically. I go ut all of the time and I really like the way my skin looks. I do not think that I could handle that whole mess again. Reading some of the postings on this list made me realize that I was not some vain, crazy person who was obsessed with my appearance. So etimes dermatologists tend not to realize that they need to be a little sensitive to how much damage acne can do to your self esteem. Luckily, I found a really great one(after about 4 other doctors) who also wants to help with the scarring that the acne h s caused. I hope that this helped a little. I will keep you posted on what my doctor does to help with the scars and any other post accutane developments that may occur. Good luck all of you with your treatment and remember you are not alone!!! :):):)

I've never felt so terrible in my entire life! Just a few years ago I was getting straight A's and kept a very active life. Now all I want to do is sit in my room. The thought of leaving my house has become terrifying. I don't want people to see this ide of me--ashamed, depressed, quiet, and weak--because that's not the real me. My acne problem began a few years ago and I went from doctor to doctor, medication to medication, until finally I demanded that I get accutane. While I was taking it I exper enced the dry eyes and lips and a slight redness in my skin tone, but these side effects didn't even matter to me because my acne immediately cleared up. After I stopped taking accutane I lived a normal, fun and active life for about a month until my wor t nightmare came true. My acne was gradually coming back!!! At first it would be the occasianal whiteheads, but as time elapsed more and more began to appear. Now I am right back where I started from. I am strongly considering another session of accut ne, but am concerned that this could even make matters worse. If anyone has gone through two treatments of accutane and can give any feedback please do so. I don't know how much longer I can live like this. I need answers and solutions fast.

I have been on accutane for 8 weeks and I am giving up. My back is so stiff I can not sleep at night. All my joints are hurting and the soles of my feet hurt all the time. My doctor said I needed to stay on the drug for 8 more weeks but I cant sleep so I have no choice. Has any one else had this problem? I'm taking 80mg a day but I also weigh 170. The rest of my symptoms are the usual ones. Also my son took this drug when he was 20 and is now 24 and a year ago he was diagnosed with cronic fat gue, I dont know if it had any thing to do with accutane or not. It sure makes me wonder. Please let me know if anyone has something on this. thanks

I am responding to the person previousely who wrote. My brother took Accutane when he was 17 and now he is 23. He has clear skin, with an occasional zit! BUT he does have a redish tone to his skin. It doesn't bother him much becasue the severe acne he had is all gone. I believe he will always have red skin. Its not that bad. A lot of people do. Just wanted to let you know it probably is a side effect of Accutane and he did not have to go through a second round of therapy but I hear a lot of people do. Its our choice, I'd rather have clear skin anyday!!!

I was on Roaccutane last year and when I finished the course I was spotless. However my spots have come back but not as bad as they used to be. So I am back on the topical treaments and tablets but these don't seem to be helping. My problem is that my ace always looks very red so I use a moisturiser however now my face just looks red and shiny. My dermotologist game me the choice, he said I can go back on Roaccutane or try Isotrexin gel, which I have been on before but without success, and minocin tab ets. I opted not to go on Roaccutane again because I don't want my face to get any redder and I don't know that when I come off it again whether my spots will come back. Can anyone help me? Has anyone been on Roaccutane more than once and is there anyo e else who has the same red face problem.

Hello to everyone! I have just finished my first month of Accutane! Things are not too bad! I have had some neck stiffness and back pain, been more tired and thirsty than normal, have noticed a major increase in hair loss along with dry scalp, and have th typical dry lips and skin! Good news is these things are not bothering me very much! I did fight off a cold sore last week, which I haven't had in many years! My skin has improved tremendously! I now have less big and painful zits...fewer each day! I am ow using lot's of face cream (Clinque's dramatically different lotion)...I heard someone say Vaseline...that made my acne worse...I do scrub every day with a buff puff to rid of the dead skin...it seems like the acne comes out and then quickly dries up an flakes off. I also found out first hand that I cannot drink while on this medicne! It does not indicate not to...but after a full dinner and a couple glasses of wine...I was very sick! Not typical for me! Definetly not worth experiencing that again! I am still on the 40 mg and for some of you who were inquiring about the weight and amount of medicine I weigh 120 Ibs. I have been using Head and Shoulders fro the dry scalp...they even have a new extra moisturizing one! I really believe this will get better. Accutane completely cleared up brother's skin...he very rarely gets a zit now! He still is combating some scalp and skin...but that is tolerable. The acne is not. Those of you out there struggling with the emotional turmoil of acne I hear you...I feel the same way...its wreaks havoc on our lives and only those of us with it can really understand. Hey I went to the store today without any make-up on...I would never have done that a month ago! Hang in there it will get better!!! Talk to you again soon-Amie

Hi, I'd just like to start off by saying thanks for a decent site on acne. I suffered from the condition from the age of 14 until I was 27. A long time. I tried every single remedy (both internal and external) until I was 26, when I was prescribed Roaccuta e. I have seen (and experienced) a lot of the side effects related to the drug, but I have to say that in my particular case I thought it was well worth it. It changed my life. Within a few months of the course (after an initial phase of grotesque acne I was completely clear and have remained so to this day. I for one am grateful to my dermatologist for helping me with this medication. There is hope. To all out there with this quite common (but seriously overlooked) condition, my heart goes out to you. Best regerds, Nozzer.

Well, this weekend has been yet another weekend of laying in bed crying about how ugly I am. Does anyone else here know what's it's like to wake up every morning and remember all over again how ugly you are? And would you believe I'm so ashamed of mysel that it's even hard for me to post this anonymous message? My experience with acne started about 3 1/2 months ago. I had always had perfectly normal skin before that (yes, the occasional zit, but everyone gets that). Then suddenly my face broke out al over. It took a month for me to realize that it wasn't going away. Then I called for an appointment with the dermatologist. Another month waiting to get in to see her, during which I cried nearly every single day. I took minocycline, differin gel, an benzomycin for two weeks until I decided I couldn't deal with it anymore: I had to have the accutane. I've now been on accutane for about a month. During the third week, I was sure that things were looking better, but now it's all changed. I think I ook almost as bad as when I started. I was on 20 mg in order to prevent the worsening that most people experience during the first part of treatment; now I've started on the 40 mg, so hopefully that will help. I know there will be good weeks and bad wee s, so that in itself doesn't discourage me so much. What I am worried about is scarring. Not the red marks, which I know will fade over time, but the tiny pits in my face. I know I'm a crater face. Other people tell me it's not that bad, but it's enou h to make me cry every time I look in the mirror. I've done a lot of research in this area, and microdermabrasion sounds a lot safer than laser resurfacing or chemical peels, which I've read can only cause more scarring. The only problem is, I'm not sur if microdermabrasion is available in my area. Has anyone had an experience with this type of scarring and successfully minimizing its appearance? I would really be interested to know. And, oh yes. My side effects while on accutane haven't been that b d. I use my chapstick every two minutes it seems like. Make sure you always have some with you. A couple minor nosebleeds. A couple rashes that my dermatologist prescribed bactroban for. I just started using all those greasy moisturizers for my dry f ce, which really irks me. I don't know if the grease could have caused my current breakout or not, but they TELL you to put vaseline on your face, and how else can you help the dryness without grease? I don't think people should be as scared of this dru as they are. It's really not that bad. I wish I could have gone on it sooner (though in some ways I think I did everything I could) in order to prevent the scarring I have. Right now, I don't think I'll ever be able to wear my hair back or not walk wi h a lowered head again. It seems pretty much impossible right now. Good luck to all of you, especially in coping with the horrible emotional affects that acne causes.

Its been about 1 month since I started taking Zinc. My acne has gotten much, much worse. It even got very cystic. Now I have icepick scars. Do these scars go away?-they are small scratches on my face-seem like they would. Does anyone know when the Zin will do anything? I have tried searching for AMBI-anyone know where I can get it? I've been unsuccesful in my search. Thanks for reading this and hopefully you can help me.

I have been on accutane for just over ywo months now; it has worked well as I only have four pimples left of which two are cystic (this compares two my pre accutane count of, well... countless zits). My problem is with blwmihing, I have dark spots on my ace where leisions existed , I did not pick at or pop any zits. My question is as follows; I have heard that benzoil peeroxide is a skin bleaching agent and can help fade blemishes, is it safe to use it while still on accutane? Also I have heard about that AMBI skin bleaching cream whats the deal with that stuff? How do you get it and is IT safe?

I took Accutane 2 years ago now, my face cleared up completely. No matter what I ate, how stressed out I got, my face was perfectly clear. Recently it's been breaking out little by little, now all of the sudden it's back again. I was wondering if anyon else has experenced this and what you did about it? I don't really want to take accutane again. I realised at the end of my treatment, that it effected my eyesight. This is a great web site! I wish I had it the firt time I was taking it. Thank you!

Terrific website, Gill. I've been looking for Accutane information everywhere and this is the first place I've found it. I'm a 32 yr. old woman in San Francisco, CA and have been struggling with cystic acne off & on for around 9 years. It started when I s arted law school (stress-related, I'm sure) and has pretty much stuck around ever since. Oral antibiotics, hormones, and traditional treatments made no difference whatsoever. What has been most horrifying to me is the transformation acne has wrought on my personality and life in general. I used to be a quite pretty and self-confident person. When the skin problems started, I began "hiding out" -- refusing to go out with friend , go out on dates, have any social activity etc. whenever I had an extreme breakout. As the problem grew worse, I found myself "hiding out" more and more. When I did go out I was perpetually sneaking into bathrooms to reapply my coverup. I became far, far too self conscious to participate in my favorite activities (surfing & kayaking) because water sports washed off the makeup I had covering my ghastly facial wounds and blotches. I became less & less comfortable with men because I knew how disgusted they'd be if they ever saw my face washed clean. The sight of my clean-washed face certainly disgusted me. I stopped looking in mirrors, except when absolutely necessary. And I found myself analyzing the skin of every woman I walked past on the street ... compar ng it to my own and further confirming my own self-disgust. I'd continually walk with my head down, wouldn't look people in the eyes and wore my hair long and pulled it around my face to hide. I started noticing that books and movies always describe (or s ow) the bad guy as "pockmarked" or an undesirable woman as having bad skin. And about four months ago I finally woke up and realized for the first time that this damn disease (and my own pathetic inability to deal with it) had eaten my life. In my view, all this howling about Accutane and its horrible side effects is a lot of noise about nothing. These side effects are nothing compared with the psychological side effects that come with severe cystic acne. I'll take these cracked dry lips, dry eyes, joint pain -- and even the liver damage risk -- any day of the week because, after just a month, I'm starting to look and feel human again (or at least like a human perpetually slathered in moisturiser and lip balm!) I actually answered the front do r yesterday wearing absolutely no makeup and had a conversation with my next door neighbor and didn't feel ashamed. It was the first time I'd let anyone see me makeup-less in 9 years. I cut my hair short and am wearing it off my face. I'm still breaking o t a little bit but it's nothing like the deep painful cystic nightmares I had before. And I'm praying this continues. Because for the first time in 9 years I feel like I'm about to get a life back. I'd like to find out if anyone out there has ever found a dermatologist (or any other doctor) who actually treats the psychological side effects of acne. I think many, many people could benefit from some sort of counseling or education on how to cope with this confidence-destroying disease.

Hi guys, today is my last day on accutane..YEAH!!! I am soooo happy. My skin is PUUUUURFECT. I've been writing here since my very first day of taking accutane. I just want to thank everyone who encouraged me and gav me advice along the way. For those of y u have doubts, or just want to know about my experience with accutane feel free to write. But trust me, i could never have worn clothes before that exposed my chest, back or arms, and now my skin is spotless.....i've never worn makeup since i'm on accutan . Side effects? slightly dried lips, nothing a little chapstick couldnt help. Well guys, good luck with accutane, i will never regret the day i decided to take that step , and i will be eternally greatful to my dermatologist, becauce she would have been p ofiting by having me visit her every month by prescribing topical solutions for me all the time, but she was honest enough to reccommend accutane to me, and the only people who benefit from this are the people in the pharmacies.

Well, its been 3 long months, but I only have just over a month left to go. All my dry skin/rash/bleeding noses/etc have gone, the only thing that has remained have been the dry lips. Oh and its staring to be summer here, and about a week ago I went out ide for 5 mins wearing full sunblock and clothing, and ended up going to a school ball looking like a lobster. I really recommend not drinking, its been real hard for me to go out with friends, but even just cutting back has helped the accutane to work t its full extent. So now I have clear skin, so long as I don't pick. I just wanted to say thanks for this site its been real helpful to know I'm not the only one. Good-luck everyone!

Hi all I'm just going into my second month of Roaccutane. I've had a check up with my Derm, had a blood test, and she's happy to let me go on until 5th January before I need to see her again. The results so far have been great, apart from a single spot on my chin, which hasn't developed into anything nasty and is now drying up, my skin is clear and I just have to use small amounts of E45 cream to combat the flaky skin, and a chap stick for my lips. I was on 40mg/day for the first month, now I'm on 60mg/day, this will probably be the dose for the remaining three months. I'll send an update in a week or so. Good luck to everyone !

The point of this message board is to provide *SUPPORT* to Acne sufferers, and for those inflicted to be able to discuss treatments, pass on tips they have managed to accumulate during treatment, and basically provide a shoulder to cry on when necessary. Any new people to this board are going to see all the abusive comments, and turn away. The population who use this board will diminish and those who need or require mutual support will not be accommodated. I *really* would not like to see the above happen, and would relish a return to the board as I knew it. Shame on those who would bring about it's death.

Matthew and Jennifer, I read your personal attack on Sharilyn and tag you both as idiots also. You write things that were said by one individual and named another one as having possibly said everything. Then say that you are biased and that it is difficu t to say no to drinking. Get a back bone and shut up or you may get a libel suit against you. might as well learn at an early age to just move on. Your opinion is not always asked for or even wanted. Think maybe now you should have not just stayed out of it but not personally attack another individual.

Matthew and Jennifer, If you are going to make personal attacks on me you should be sure and make statements that only apply to me. I did not use foul language as idiot is not foul language, some other person used the foul language that you repeated. Yo need to take a good look at yourself and stay out of other peoples business if you cannot properly pass on the correct information. And Jennifer I would like you to point out my previous messages (before James Said "That's it, I'm sick of") that contain angry comments as you stated in your personal attack towards me. Both of you should be ashamed. You both were so quick to jump and only use my name but throw other peoples dirt in my name. I am sure that it will all work out in your Karma.

Jennifer and Matthew, No one cares about your opinion either. especially me. James is an idiot and maybe he should think before he speaks about others postings. "That's it!!!, I'm sick of" is anger and was taken personal since I wrote something about my opinion of alcohol i my system. So what if he is sick of anything, keep it to his self or tell it to his psychiatrist. Leave others alone about it or learn how to communicate in a friendlier way.

Wow!, It seems as if there's been a battle sconce the last time I've been here! Guys, take it easy! Sherilynn I must say that I agree with Jeniffer when she noted that you are the antagonistic one, we're all adults here (well ... all except for James Tech ically!). I mean when you call someone asinine, or an idiot what can you expect but an aggressive response? I must admit however that I am a bit biased. As a young male myself I can understand the frustration that James is going through, lets face it, drinking is a very social thing and it's hard to say no, especially when you consider all the different views f oating around on the matter. After all there isn't even a warning against it on the package inserts here in the States. James went to his physician and made what I hope was an informed decision, however this is a very personal issue and can be made only b the individual. Some doctors are more opposed to it than thers, so go and see your physician and make your own physician. By the way; I drank RESPONIBALLY (once a week, this means not getting smashed) during my successful course of Accutane a year ago w th no complications.

I completely agree that this site should be used in the most positive manner only. While I was using Accutane I was very appreciative of being able to relate to others' experiences. I am concerned when someone says that it is fine to drink alcohol while on Accutane. This may be true for some people. A female I know ended up in the hospital with an IV as she drank some wine and had an Antabuse type reaction. Her father is a doctor. They wrote the company (Roche) of their experience. One thing that se ms to be the case (just as in life) is that all people are affected differently. While I may have one set of symptoms or problems on Accutane; someone else could have a very different experience. While I was on Accutane I decided to err on the side of c ution. I am not one who really likes to drink anyway though so it was easy for me. I just figured why take any unnecessary risk. I wanted to get through my five months as smoothly as possible so I watched what I ate and did not drink. Basically, it is an individual choice. My Dermatologist recommended avoiding alcohol so I followed his advice. I am just concerned when someone vents with so much frustration about something like alcohol consumption while on a serious medication. Bottom line - consult your doctor and make your own informed decision. Good luck to everyone!

Perhaps I should clarify my earlier statement about alcahol consumption. As previously stated, my DERMATOLOGIST informed me -upon being asked about the dangers of alcahol use while on accutane- that the problems posed by alcahol were limited to liver dama e and as the comment below mentions; increased blood triglyceride levels which are monitered in your monthly blood tests. He told me that consumption of alcahol in Moderation should pose no threat. Common sense ,however, dictates that this restriction sho ld apply to all people, on accutane or not, due to the fact that substance abuse of any kind is stupid and dangerous. My problem however concerns the fairy tales that assosiate the consumption of alcahol with so called averse side affects caused by its co bination with accutane. I am by no means encouraging people to go out and booze up a storm, in fact if you want to maintain a truly healthy lifestyle that is excactly the opposite of what should be done. However it is not going to kill you, or cause your kin to fall off as many people would have you belive. It can be very frustrating to us all to read such claims that do not support their argument with any reasonable supporting evidence, or when others dismiss comments as "asinine" without even an attemp at an opposing argument explaining why. One important point though, which I am sure all will agree upon is to ask your derm if you have any questions. Don't rely on only what others have posted to the net. After all that's what they (doctors) get paid fo isn't it! Thank you.Commments?

The point about not taking alcohol with Roaccutane is two fold - firstly (and mainly) the liver issue. Both Roaccutane and Alcohol are processed by the liver, combine the two and you are putting unneccesary strain upon it - too much strain and it cannot f nction properly = major problems for the person involved (first noticable signs include liver pain, then possible jaundice etc..) The second point, the term 'beer belly' - think about the effect that consumption (okay - over consumption) of beer can have, with all that fat producing a beer belly - now with some patients Roaccutane can affect fat levels (hence the blood tests that in lude checks for Lipids, Triglycerides, Cholestorol, etc..) so if the drug raises the level, combined with the extra intake, that could lead to additional problems. Quick Question - does anybody know about taking paracetemol whilst on Roaccutane (as this drug is also processed by liver) ??? Ace (outside I laugh, inside I cry :( ) xxxxx

This is to James with your asinine comment about alcohol and Accutane (by the way, perhaps you should get spell check on your computer). It is definitely unwise to consume alcohol while taking this medication. I would suggest that anyone taking this dru should check with their PHYSICIAN and not listen to anyone's beliefs on the internet.

Thats It!!! I'm sick of people accusing alcahol of being the instagator of side effects, or intererfrereing with the working process of accutane. Like with many drugs, accutane is hard on the liver, alcahol compounds this, nothing more!. This is what my d rm told me, I would love to hear of any real proof otherwise, but until then stop the which hunt on booze.

FINALLY, Finished my 2nd course of Accutane on 10/12/98. Was a rough 5 months. I broke out everywhere, even on my arms. The ends of most of my fingers were sore and the skin was flaking. Dermatologist said that mostly happened with males if at all. bled easily and actually still am healing up. I had scaly skin on my arms and legs towards that last few months of treatment. Arms are almost rid of scales, legs still have some a couple weeks after treatment ended. Still breaking out a little. I miss d a few days of work during the course because I looked so bad. I still have high hopes that I will even get better as all turned out O.K. with my first course in apprx. 1991. Right after my course ended, I started taking 65 mg. of zinc daily and 3 mg. o copper. Read the combo of these two is important. My liquid vitamins have 15 mg. of zinc and 1 mg of copper and am taking 50 mgs of zinc with 2 mgs of copper supplement. I was taking 35,000 IU's of vitamin A (palmitate)water dispersable. When I saw m dermatologist for my final visit two weeks after I finished my course of Accutane. He said I should not take extra vitamin A as he as seen toxicity in women who have taken only 20,000 IU's. I have read that up to 35,000 may be o.k. 50,000 might be con idered too high. 100,000 I.U.'s have been used to treat acne patients for a short term. I am now re-evaluating how much Vitamin A to take. I will probably cut down my dosage for right now and see how that does. I already have 10,000 I.U.'s in the liqu d vitamins that I take daily. I also read that Vitamin B-12 may be helpful so I found a liquid B-50 complex to take in addition to the small amounts already in my liquid vitamins. In addition to Vit A water dispersable supplement, I also take a vitamin E supplement. My liquid vitamins cover most of the basics and then the only supplements I am taking is Vitamin B-50 liquid complex (added to my liquid vitamins), Zinc 50 w/ 2mgs of Copper, and Vit. A and Vitamin E. That is only 4 extra supplements. Well s e how things go. I believe that if I take no supplements that the acne will return. I also believe it could be a deficiency that may be helped with the right amount of vitamins, etc. After all, Accutane is a derivative of Vitamin A. And I have heard D ctor's say not to take vitamins. I am listening to him as far as toxicity. Any person who takes vitamins should do research and not go overboard. I have an appt with an herbalist on November 4th. I will see what she has to offer. I read an article in uly that she cured he own acne at age 32 with herbs. I waited until my course of Accutane was finished and then I made an appt. with her. I may be out 50 bucks but I also may get something helpful out of it. I am still hopeful there is something to hel maintain the benefits of accutane and I do not believe I will get that maintenance cure from a Doctor. I do know that they will happily accept my payments of Insurance the next time I need Accutane. Now I have to go back an read a month or more of comme ts as I did not have my computer hooked up for at least one month. P.S. I tried to drink alcohol but I think it made me have scaly skin and made my healing worse, so I gave it up.
