Arrowhead Provincial Park

August 12-21, 2002 - Page 3

The adventures continue as we explore the dark corners of the park and go where no camper has gone before! Well at least not in exactly the same way.

Hike

Arrowhead boasts several excellent hiking and biking trails.

Hike

The goal ... hike every trail in the park before we leave.

Hike

Mayflower lake near the front of the park has a trail that leads you into the beaver marsh.

The troops joyfully march on amidst sweaty interludes swatting the mosquitoes that seemed equally exuberant about our campaign.

Hike

The scenery was serenely crafted in a variety of green and earthy tones.

Wildlife

Astute observers can catch glimpses of the local wildlife ...

Wildlife

... or the evidence thereof.

Wildlife

We were fortunate to capture the track of an animal that the locals refer to as Sasquatch ...

Wildlife

... and a picture of this rare creature. The Nature Education Center informed us that it may be a related species.

Canoe

The next agenda item ... Extreme Canoe Adventure! We set off from Arrowhead Lake in two canoes, travelling down the Little East River, portaging around Stubb's Falls, down into the Big East River. Destination ... Big Bend.

Canoe

After two hours of paddling upstream, joviality began to wear thin and the atmosphere contained a hint of mutiny.

Canoe

"I'm sure it's just around the next bend!". After several similar exhortations and another thirty gruelling minutes ...

Canoe

... we arrived at Big Bend. Here the river has carved out a scenic wonder in the glacial deposits, revealing a huge bank of layered sand that slowly erodes over the years.

Canoe

Upon consuming some refreshments and splashing about in the river...

Canoe

... we successfully concluded our five hour adventure with a more leisurely trek downstream back to home base.
