Teeing The Ball

Most players are afraid they will sky their drives and they tee the ball low believing this will offset the error. The skied shot is caused by getting off balance while trying to throw the body, instead of the hands, into the shot.

The different depths of club faces, shown here, determine just how high the ball should be teed. The deep-faced driver on the left requires the ball to be teed higher than it would be for a shallow faced wood.

Lofts of the iron and wood clubs

The ball is swept away from the tee on the upswing. This imparts very little back rotation on the ball when it lands on the fairway and the ball will run on freely.

For fairway woods and irons the ball is struck sharply on the downswing. The loft on the clubface lifts the ball into the air and the sharp downward impact imparts backspin.
