Winter
Time Sand Castles
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 Tablesppon Oil
2t cream of tarter
Food coloring
Cook over heat until ball forms stirring constantly
have the child color pictures
and tell you
what they are about, then help
record the stories and mount the
accompanying illustrations in
a "book" made of folded over construction
paper. Or, if the child
likes making up stories, work in the opposite
direction, asking them to create
a picture to illustrate a story they
have already come up with.
Take one of your child’s favorite stories and expand on it!
For example: Dr. Suess
Fox in Socks
After reading the story together,
you can:
- Play a sock matching game
(nice to do after a load of laundry!)
- Make a rhyme list -you write/say
a word - ask your child to make a
rhyme (it doesn’t have to be
a real word - this is Dr. Suess after all!)
-Make sugar cookies in the shape
of socks - and decorate them all
different colors
-Make sock puppets with mismatched
socks
-Hang a spring-loaded curtain
rod in a doorway with a sheet and then
have a puppet show with your
cookies at intermission!
What you will need:
1 tablespoon fruit-flavored gelatin
mix (with sugar)
2 tablespoons hot water
Glossy pictures cut from magazines,
mailings, old posters...
Place the gelatin in a small
bowl, add hot water, and stir until
dissolved. While the "stamp
glue" is still warm, spread onto the back of
paper with fingers or a brush.
The stamps may take several hours to
dry. If they curl, flatten
them by placing the dry stamps between
sheets of wax paper under a
heavy book. When ready to use, wet the back
of the stamp and stick it to
paper.
If you have a toddler you know
how they LOVE stickers. Get creative,
use blank labels (they come
in many sizes) and write their name or draw
something for them. If
the child is old enough, have them draw (or
scribble) what they want. Voila!
a home made sticker!!
Fun way to spice up putting away toys
You’ll need:
index cards
glue
clear contact paper
kids toy catalogs/flyers
markers
tape
Have your child cut out toys
that you have in the house from the catalogs.
Paste them onto the index card
and write what the toy is underneath the picture.
Then put contact paper on it
(hint - wait until you are all done - you’ll
waste less contact paper that
way). Tape the card where your child
should put that toy. It
is a great clean up tool *and* it promotes
reading through word recognition
and association!
Ever build a sandcastle inside in the middle of a blizzard?Well now you can!
2 cups clean sand,1 cup of cornstarch,and
about 1 and 1/2 cups of hot water.
In an OLD pan mix sand and cornstarch
really well(good job for the kiddies)
then add water,stir on stove
until it thickens.
When thick pour out on sheets
of wax paper to cool. It can be molded
and shaped if not kept in an
air tight container it will harden
