1962
|
SMJK
Hua Lian began as a
Conforming School with a total enrolment of 1,324
pupils in 36 classes.
The first Principal was Madam Woo
Shao Ming.
In
September, Mr. Liew
Kok Teng took over as
acting Principal when Madam
Woo passed away.

1963
|
Mr.
Lean Teng Meng was
appointed to head the school but left in October. Mr.
Liew Kok Teng was
reappointed as acting Principal.

1965
|
In
September, Mr. Ding
Huang Doh was
appointed as Principal but he left to join the Federal
Inspectorate after a year and Mr.
Liew again served as
acting Principal.

1967
|
The
school shifted to the present site in the Lake Garden,
with Mr. Chan Sek Hoy
as its Principal. A piece of land beside the school
buildings was turfed. Donations were collected to
install fans
in the classrooms and to settle the schoolĄ¯s
outstanding debts of
RM17,000. When Mr.
Chan fell ill, Mr.
Leong Wai Min took
over as acting Principal.

1969
|
Mr.
Chin Tee Loong took
over the acting post when Mr. Leong
was transferred out.
|
|
1970
|
Mr.
Chan resigned for
health reasons and Mr.
Chin Tee Loong
was appointed the Principal.
Mr.
Chin left to further
his study at the University
of Malaya.
Mr.
U Yong Leong headed
the school. Form 6 classes were started. A
five-and-the-half-acre piece of land
beside the school was acquired to build a
field and a
bicycle to shed.

1978
|
In
July 6, Mr. Lau Po Yee
was appointed the acting Principal when Mr.
U retired.

1979
|
A
2-storey block house, the library, a Science
Lab and a Domestic Science Room
was built.

1980
|
Mr.
Chong Kah See was
appointed the Principal.
|
|
1982
|
With
the help of the Minister
of Primary Industries, Datuk Paul Leong, a new hall
was built.
|
|
1985
|
Two
badminton courts were
constructed beside the hall. The
Computer Club was
formed in April.
|
|
1986
|
Two
science laboratories
were built. Mr. Chong
retired and Mr. Lau Po
Yee was reappointed
as acting Principal.

1988
|
Mr.
Ong Teow Leng was
appointed Principal. The
school gate, two new classrooms
and a pavillion
were constructed.

1989
|
Mr.
Quah Chin Eng, from Sri
Pinang TeachersĄ¯ Training College, Penang,
was promoted to SMJK
Hua Lian as the
Afternoon Supervisor.

1992
|
SMJK
Hua Lian celebrated
its 30th
Anniversary. The
7th batch of Graduating students
donated RM20,000
to the school.

1993
|
Walkathon
Hua Lian was held
to build a 4-storey Administration block.
|
|
1994
|
In
June, Mr. Quah Chin
Eng, the Afternoon
Supervisor, initiated the Computer
Class. Mr.
Ling Tiong Soon took
over as acting Principal when Mr.
Ong retired in
September.

1995
|
In
February, Mr. Leong
Soong Tuen was
transferred from SMJK
Yuk Kwan, Batu Gajah
to head the school. Mr.
Ling retired in
March. Mr Quah
was appointed the Senior Assistant of the school in
June.

1997
|
In
August 19, Mr. Leong retired. Mr. Quah
took over as acting Principal.

|
1998
|
In
January 16, Mr. Quah
was officially appointed the Principal of the school
by the Ministry of
Education.
A new fence
in front of the school and a
stage for school assembly
in the school field were built in December.

1999
|
In
September, the school library was upgraded and 5
computers with Internet facility were installed. A
Guard House
was built beside the Main Gate and security
guards were employed
to strengthen the security of the school.

2000
|
In
December, a new fence
on the right hand side of the school gate and a
new Bus Stop were
constructed.
In
January, the Lions
Club Taiping Bunga Raya, Junior Chamber Taiping
and Junior Jaycees
SMJK Hua Lian donated
the covered walk path by the Admin Block.
The
school library was equiped with ASTRO
and a Multimedia Study
Corner was also set
up.

2001
|
In
May, The Interact Club
constructed the covered walk path joining the Admin
Block, the canteen and the Hall.
SMJK
Hua Lian was awarded
the best school in
finance management
in the district of Larut, Matang & Selama.
In
Jun, a Scout House
was built and two
basketball courts
were repaired. The
school library won
the first prize
in the Library
Competition in the district of Larut, Matang &
Selama.
In
July, the Ministry of
Education started to
build a three storey block with 10 classrooms was
completed and used. The
Interact Club donated
the covered walk path joining
the new block and the library. Iron
grills were installed
at the staircases and fences built arround the septic
tanks to enhance safety.
In
September, the Consumer
Club of SMJK
Hua Lian,
representing Perak State, won the first
prize in the Secondary
Schools Comsumer Quiz Year 2001 at national level.
The teachersĄ¯ office was air-conditioned.

2002
|
The
library was further
upgraded with glass
partitions, air-conditioners
and new chairs
and tables.
Repair and upgraded the drainage
system, fencing
school hall basement.
The school office was air-conditioned.
The
Junior Jaycees club
donated curtains
for the school hall. The
Interact Club
repainted the stage and built a pavillion in front of
the new block. Berita
Hua Lian Club donated 150 examination tables
and a printer for the
library. The Parents
and TeachersĄ¯ Association
donated curtains
for teachers'office.

2003 |
About 20 old trees in
the school compound were trimmed for safety purpose.
Ceilings of the hall and roofs of old classrooms were
repaired. Iron grills were installed in classrooms
used for the teaching of Science and Maths in English.
All teachers were given new executive chairs so that
they can work in comfort. Tables and chairs of
students were repaired and repainted by the Furniture
Committee under Mr. Yoong Beng Wah. On 1 March, Mr.
Lee Ah Hoy was appointed as Senior Assistant
(Co-curriculum). On 1 September, Pn. Lam Lai Phing was
promoted as Senior Assistant (Administration), Mr.
Ravendran as the head of Language Department, Pn. Chew
Ang Kin as the head of Humanity Department and Ms. Loh
Ah Mooi as Afternoon Supervisor. SMJK Hua Lian was
awarded the best school in the STPM result 2002 in
quantity among the urban secondary school in Perak. |

2004 |
A year of more
changes, new things, new achievements, and more
expenditure ... We had to bid farewell to our
Principal Mr. Quah, who retired on 5th June, after
holding office for 6 1/2 years. Pn. Lam Lai Phing was
appointed the Principal on 16th June. The school went
through many physical changes, with the help of funds
from the Board of Governors. The Old Boys' Room was
painted and air-conditioned, together with the
Counseling Room and the Senior Assistants' room. There
were 350 plastic chairs for the school hall and the
Co-curricular meeting room. The school office was
equipped with a Hot/Cold water dispenser. The computer
room at the administration block was fitted with iron
door grills. The flat ceilings in the old school
section were replaced with new ones and some bad leaks
were repaired. The plumbing problems at the toilets
were rectified, to a certain extent. The old fans and
lights in the hall were replaced and the canteen area
had new fans and lights. New cement wall divisions
were erected at the Form 4 block to replace the flimsy
wooden partitions. The front school gate had a new
facelift, together with the entire front fencing.
With the help of
the PTA, we started the Cleanliness Campaign on 31st
June with a Gotong Royong officiated by YB Datuk Dr.
Kayveas, the Assistant Minister of the Prime
Minister's Department.
The security and
discipline of the school were tightened. With the
strengthening of the Discipline board we saw the
implementation of stricter rules and regulations.
On Academic and
Co-curricular achievements, for the school year 2003,
we received 4 certificates, for 100% passes in Pend.
Islam (PMR), Pend. Seni (SPM), and overall STPM
achievement. WE received another certificate for
doubling our achievement in terms of the number of top
scorers, (11As) in the SPM from 2002 to 2003. For this
year, the Consumers' Club managed to get 3rd at the
National level Quiz competition. The St. John's
Ambulance team emerged as overall state champions and
one division became the national champion in Uniform
Checking and marching. At SUKMA, the Gymnastic and
Wushu team brought golds back. Three students made the
school and state proud because they competed at the
National Level 'Scientific Innovation' competition and
received a consolation prize. |
