Pn Lam Lai Phing

Dear parents, teachers and students of SMJK Hua Lian,

Time goes on. Another year has passed, and changes are inevitable. Mr. Quah, the previous principal (for 6 1/2 years), retired in June. I took office on 16 June.

I have been asked to express what my vision and mission are, for the school. To put it in a nutshell, my vision is an 'educated' Hua Lian in all sense and spheres, reflecting her glory.

Here is my concept of vision: I walk around and see the physical school, and the students and teachers, and over the days and months I get to see the whole picture. I want to change the picture. That picture becomes my vision.

Then it becomes my mission, to act on it with the team of administrators and work force available. I then will try all suitable ways and means to put my vision into action.

I am very thankful that when I took over as the Principal, I received the support of the Board, the PTA (PIBG) and the teachers. I am very thankful that I have a good team of administrators (PKs and GKs) helping me. I am also very fortunate to have a firm and strong Discipline Board. Here, I want to sincerely thank all the above mentioned for supporting me. I want to stress that I cannot, and will not, work as one person. Mainly because I am not a superwoman, but more so because I believe in team work. I am working towards a team 'that beats with ONE heart', ie. having the same vision and mission as I have, because that kind of team works for progress and success.

I must admit that the work now, and ahead of us will s-t-r-e-t-c-h all of us who are working for the good of Hua Lian, to the limit. We began the discipline and cleanliness campaign in July, and received the full support of the Board, PTA and teachers, and could carry out the project successfully. We were happy with the drastic improvement. But there is much room for improvement. The process must go on to stop all throwing of tissues, papers and plastics, etc. Getting rid of this 'third world mentality' begins here in school and is carried on later in life. Always remember this simple principle:

     If somebody throws rubbish,
     There will be some rubbish,
     If nobody throws rubbish,
     There will be NO rubbish.

On the issue of discipline, I have to say we have achieved a certain degree of success. A lot more needs to be done, and the school administrators and discipline board are working very hard (and overtime) on this. In this area too, I am proud to say that my teachers have been able to cope very well with all the discipline problems. I must say that if teachers can cope in Hua Lian, (said to be the second biggest school in Perak in terms of enrolment) they can cope in any other school. Please note that on issues of discipline, we not only need the help of teachers. We need parents to cooperate with us, and also help us help their children, who have certain problems (ranging from playing truant and having bad habits, to different levels of rudeness and indiscipline). Many issues have to be discussed and solved, and at the moment, we are also keying in on the security of the school. Our aim is definitely for a safe and healthy teaching and learning environment in Hua Lian. Please remember that 'Rome is not built in a day'. We need time and support from all areas.

To parents and ex-students who have an interest in the school, we welcome you to participate in building up Hua Lian. You can help by cooperating with us, and also by contributing to the school fund. Every act of support that you show is very appreciated. In this respect, I want to personally thank all those parents and teachers and ex-students who have not only kept in touch with us, but also helped us in more than one of ways. I am very happy to say that as the principal, I have a good relationship with the Board of Governors, PIBG members, the teachers and the pupils. I cannot say that all of them will agree with me 100%, but we know how to 'disagree agreeably', and we know that we need not 'major' on 'minors'.

Finally, we are now living in very challenging times. We need to continue to be aware and alert to all that is going on around us. I urge all parents, teachers and students to keep in touch, and try to be positively involved in all that is going on around us. This is to ensure a nation that is, in the words of our Prime Minister, "cemerlang, gemilang and terbilang" and a "World Class society".

Thank you and God bless you.
