Clyde Perky had an idea. A grand idea that just didn't work out. In
1929, following the opening of Flager's railroad, Mr. Perky bought
25,000 acres on Sugarloaf Key. He knew the railroad would draw
tourists to the Keys but that the horrendous mosquito population
might be a deterrent. That's when Mr. Perky had his brainstorm. He
would build a 30 foot tower that would draw thousands of bats to
his island, thus eliminating the mosquitos (see, bats eat
mosquitoes). Great Idea! He sent away for the plans to build his
tower and hired Fred Johnson to do the construction. The tower
would even have a chute down the middle to be used for collecting
guana-a valuable fertilizer. Well, the tower was built and filled
with a "secret bat bait" that was sure to lure the bats. Mr. Perky
waited...and waited...the bats never came. This interesting bit of
local history has withstood the ravages of time, sea air, vandals
and hurricanes. Made of Dade County Pine, it's sure to last many
more years as long as development stays away. "dedicated to good
health at Perky, Florida".

This was cool even if my F/O (GAR) got bitten by a ton of ants!!! Watch out for these little buggers. This was an extraordinary cache if for the history alone. Seems like a very simple structure until you read why it was built. Seems like it is tougher than it looks

After communicating with cache owner we retrieved the large version of this cache. It was so exposed that it was sure to be muggled again. We added a new log to the small version located right on the coords. Watch out for ANTS! Also took the Sylvester TB to move along.

Ok, let me explain what's going on with this cache... The original container ended up going awol before it was even found the first time. The Sofa King then replaced it with a decon...which also went awol. The decon was replaced by a camoed match holder. Ok, everybody with me so far? Now it seems the original container has been rediscovered! Until something else is worked out, whichever container you find will count! One is big, one is small. One is easy, one is hard. Only one is at the posted coords. Whichever cache you find and log doesn't really matter. What counts is that this crazy game brought you to one of the most unusual sights in the Florida Keys! Keep caching and enjoy!!!

I found the cache that was quite off from the coordinates. I was there to actually replace the log for the owner in a small container but came up with the other one that was quite well equipped. The original coordinates were in a very wet muddy area. Thought I was on the right track since boards had been placed to help get to the area. So I guess this still counts as a find??? We had been to the bat tower before many years ago. Such a neat part of the historical Keys!!
