This site is about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida and requires a boat or sea plane; hence, the 5 difficulty rating.

This cache is located in Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas. The fort was constructed with over 16,000,000 bricks in the mid 1800's as America's largest coastal fort, but was never completed. During the Civil War, it served as a prison for deserters and later held the 4 men convicted of complicity in President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, most notedly Dr. Samuel Mudd.

Today, the fort is in the care of the National Park Service and offers some of the finest snorkeling opportunities in North America. Also, bird watchers can spot as many as 200 species that migrate through the islands or call them home.

Happy Thanksgiving! Found this on our day trip on the Fast Cat. Lost my breakfast on the ride over but still had a great day. The fort and surroundings are beautiful and it was worth the trip. TFTC
