Superboy # 64

PLOT

  • As Black Zero prepares to invade the mainstream DCU Earth, he learns that the Doomsdays have broken free of their chamber (see Superboy # 63). He sends them to a "dead Hyperzone" and goes off to deal with Superboy and the Challengers of the Unknown, who, we are told, have caused Black Zero more problems than anyone.
  • Superboy and the Challengers try to free the Legion of Superboys (culled from all the realities that Black Zero has conquered -- see issue # 62), but discover that if the Superboys are released, their unique Hyperfrequencies may be lost, and they'd never be able to find their homeworlds again. A decision is made to send the Superboys back home instead, but Black Zero interferes, destroying the equipment that contains the Hyperfrequency codes.
  • Black Zero unwittingly frees the Earth-1-like Superboy that Kon-El met in issue 61, who then frees the rest of the Superboys. A battle ensues between the Legion of Superboys and Black Zero's Stormguards, while the Challengers go off to convince Metron to stop Zero's rampage.
  • Kon-El and the other Superboys tell Black Zero he can have their realites -- if he kills them, which he cannot do, since they are closer to him than brothers, than clones.
  • Victory appears imminent, until all the Superboys but Kon-El are returned to their home realities by Metron, who has decided, for the sake of scientific observation, to take away Black Zero's Hypertime abilities and see what happens on a world without Black Zero's interference. Metron uses a mother box to subdue Zero.
  • Superboy decides to take Black Zero back to his reality, and with Metron's help, the Challengers build a Hypership to traverse Hypertime -- the scenic route. Black Zero breaks free of the mother box's hold and tears a hole in the side of the Hypership. Red and June, two of the Challengers, get sucked out of the ship, and Superboy takes off after them.
  • Black Zero, worried that if Superboy dies, so too does he, goes after Superboy, who is successful in saving only June. After placing Superboy and June back on the Hypership, Black Zero is hit by the white and black energy of Hypertime -- but ONLY Zero is killed, and not Superboy. The Hyperstorm increases in intensity, and the Hypership is engulfed in white nothingness.
  • Back on Kon-El's Earth, Cadmus Director Cannon begins looking for a replacement to take Superboy's place as field agent. . .
