My Views on Interracial Relationships

And some links and other info as well.....

"You can be anybody
that you want to be
You can love whomever you will
You can travel any country
where your heart leads
And know I will love you still

You can live by yourself
You can gather friends around
You can choose one special one
And the only measure
of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind
when you're gone."
-Fred Small

Well, hmmmm, there's a lot I could say about this, but those who know me also know that I tend to date "interracially", or more to the fact, interculturally.

I've received some prejudice from whites, and non-whites as well, because of this. I really don't think that's right, since people should be able to date who they want regardless of skin color, background, or anything else. I remember going into a fast food place in Oklahoma City with a black female friend of mine. As we waited in line (about a foot or two apart), we both noticed three black guys (obviously friends) in front of us looking back at us and talking. We heard comments like, "What is /she/ doing with /him/?" and stuff like that, kind of making it obvious that they didn't approve of a white guy dating a black girl, even though it seemed obvious to her and me that we were not dating. We didn't say anything to them at that time, but once we sat down at a booth, we both cracked up. There are other cases where I have received looks and comments, but you learn to ignore them. Furthermore, I have lost contact with some people whom I thought were friends because of this, but now I have gained many new friends who accept me for who I am, and who I like.

Why do I date different "races"?? Well, because it seems that some of my best friendships, and romantic relationships, have been with people who have a different color of skin than I do. My best romantic relationship was with an asian guy who showed me love, respect and helped me through many problems. We are still good friends, even after breaking up, and I hope we remain so. Can you find this in your own "race"?? Sure, but I've found that I like the differences of other cultures, and the experiences that someone of a different color brings in. As they say, it may not be for everyone, but I enjoy it.

Finally, all I have to say is that we should appreciate our differences, no matter if it is the color of our skin, our gender, sexual orientation, or culture. Everyone is unique and has unique skills and opinions to help. Just give them a chance. You may not like what they have to say, belive, live, or look like, but give them the respect that you would want yourself.
