Since I have been given
this opportunity to share with you some art work that
I consider to be important, I thought that I should
share with you some of my feelings and ideas regarding
this subject. You may have noticed, in my opening
statement, that I never mentioned the word "graffiti".
The reason I did that was because I wanted the works
to be viewed as "art". What category of art is really up
to the artists, individually. There are many words in
many languages for describing this genre because it is
not only a universal means of expession but also has
an ancient history, in fact the word "graffito" was coined,
by archeologists, to decribe text and characters carved
into ancient Egyptian buildings. Most
of the work I have shown here I would put into the
category of "murals". This style of mural is new and
evolving, there are different styles in different
regions of the planet, but the more you look at these
works the more you see that there are many similarities.
It is truly a universal art form.
Given the popularity of this work and it's ancient
history, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal
to the civic leaders of every community to evaluate
their perspective on this art form. Many forward
thinking towns and cities have already done this and
have designated specific walls and areas where this
art can flourish. Many companies have hired these artist
to paint the outsides of their buildings. Many
communities have simply tried to eradicate this form of
expression. Any study of history has proven that the
suppression of the freedom of expression has negative
results. What is needed is a recognition of the
initiative of these artists, recognition of their talent
and recognition of their strong desire to
share their art with everyone.
