Characters |
Pip: He is the main character in this coming of age story. Pip's entire family is deceased except his sister and her husband. The reader will go through the entire book inside of Pip's head. Pip's life goes through a rags to riches sequence throughout the book. |
Mrs. Joe (Georgiana) Gargery: She is Pip's older sister by about twenty years. Mrs. Joe is the one that "raised Pip by hand." She has an extremely bad temper, and often takes her anger out on Pip and Joe, her husband. Eventually, something happens to Mrs. Joe that destroys her temper and violent ways. |
Joe Gargery: Joe is the blacksmith whom Mrs. Joe is married. Joe is very kind and is great friend with Pip; Joe and Pip often share punishment from Mrs. Joe. Joe is the model of everything common and honest in Great Expectations. |
Mr. Woplse: He is the clerk at the church; He wishes to be a minister, if the church would only be "thrown open". Eventually Mr Wopsle becomes an actor. |
Mr. Pumblechook: Pumblechook is the uncle of Joe. He is properous in the business of corn growing/supplies, and he owns his own horse-drawn carriage. |
Mr. Hubble: He is a Wheelwright. Mr. and Mrs. Hubble are extremely minor characters. |
Abel Magwitch; a.k.a. Provice; a.k.a. Pip's Convict: He is the mysterious covict Pip meets in the churchyard. This convict will make a comeback at the climax of the novel. |
Mr. Wopsle's great aunt: She runs a quite comical "school" in town in the small cottage she rents. She sleeps most of the time, and when she does wake up, she hits the young ones. She also runs a small shop in the cottage, but it is run by her granddaughter, Biddy. |
Biddy: She is the granddaughter of Mr. Wopsle's great aunt (if you can figure out the Relation to Mr. Wosple, please inform me), and like Pip, is an orphan. She is very smart, and is the one that teaches Pip everthing early on. Eventually, she moves into Pip's house for some later reason. |
Compeyson: This is the name of the other convict Pip comes across in the marshes. His past is involved with that of Provice, and his name and story be revealed sometime after the climax. |
Miss Havisham: She is an extremely rich and eccentric old woman that lives in a mansion uptown. Not much is known about Miss Havisham, and her life is very odd. For some reason, she is always wearing an extremely old wedding gown, and all the clocks in her mansion are stopped at twenty to nine. More is revealed about her later in the book. |
Estella: She is the very beautiful adopted daughter of Miss Havisham. She is about the same age as Pip, and as soon as Pip sees her, he becomes obsessed with her and the idea of being as aristocratic as she is. During childhood, she is very cruel to Pip. |
Unnamed Stranger / Convict: Pip meets this man in the Three Jolly Bargemen, and knows nothing of him. The stranger is actually a messenger for someone to Pip. Pip will find out more about this mysterious persona when he grows older. |
Orlick: He is a dirty, scandelous fellow that is journeyman to Joe. He seems to always be sulking about, and Pip hates him very much. |
Mr. Jaggers: He is the lawyer that arranges many affairs, including Pip's eventually. He is very professional, and is more concerned about money than his clients feelings. |
Wemmick: He is Mr. Jaggers' best clerk. It is very interesting how he has two completely different personas; when he is at home and when he is in his home. Wemmick is very helpful and does a lot for Pip. |
Trabb: He is the tailor in Pip's town. |
The follow is a list of every slightly major character in Great Expectations with a very brief description. |
