Driving
Starting in Reykjavík, it takes you about 30 min to reach Hveragerði, which is famous for its greenhouse agriculture.  After 45 minutes on the road you reach the town Selfoss (57 km), on the banks of Ölfursá (á = river).  Along the same highway 1 you will drive through several small town, Hella (94 km) and Hvolfsvöllur (106 km), Vík í Mýrdal (187 km), Kirkubæjarklaustur (258 km) and Höfn í Hornarfirði (459 km).  By then you will have been on the road for ~8hrs straight.  On the way there are many beautiful places to see, and below I show you a few.
Scenic Sites
It is a nice short hike to this great waterfall Skógarfoss

Driving about 154 km along route 1 , the main highway around Iceland, you can see this beautiful waterfall.

The spray from Skógarfoss creates this nice rainbow
