The gray and black tabby known as Munkustrap is the second in command of the Jellicle tribe. He narrates the story of the Jellicle Ball and is probably the most visible character in the musical who is never named directly. Origionally, he was simply a tough tom who would fight Macavity, but he has taken over many of the singing rolls once done by Mr. Mistoffelees. He is a Protecting cat, for lack of a better term for him. Mukustrap protects the tribe from Grizabella when she tries to return to the tribe, as he and many other adult cats see her leaving the tribe years earlier as desertion. He also is the first tom to jump in and fight Macavity when he crashes the Jellicle Ball. This fight is all the more heated if we believe in the "love triangle" of Munkustrap, Demeter, and Macavity. In the video, she can be seen nuzzling Munkustrap after he is wounded. Many people also think that Munkustrap is related to Old Deuteronomy, and that when it is finally time for him to go to the Heaviside Layer, Munkustrap will take his place as the Jellicle Leader.
