Activities in Munich
General information
Munich is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with dozens of places to see and attractions to visit. The Munich tourist office "Fremdenverkehrsamt" provides lots of information and printed material about tourist attractions in Munich. Visit their Internet site at www.muenchen-tourist.de or visit their office in the Central Station "Hauptbahnhof", open Monday to Saturday 9:00-20:00, Sunday 10:00-18:00. If you are interested in visiting a tourist attraction in Munich, do not hesitate to announce it on the Yahoo! group. Most probably, there will be a couple of students who would like to join you.
Movies:
In Munich, there are two major movie theaters mainly viewing English spoken movies: Cinema and Museum Lichtspiele.
Cinema
Cinema is a modern movie theater that presents the latest block buster movies in their original English version. Cinema is located on Nymphenburger Str. 31, reachable by U1 to subway station Stiglmaier Platz, exit Nymphenburger Str. - On Mondays and Tuesdays (Cinema days) tickets cost 5.00 Euros.
- Rest of the week the price is 7.00 Euros, with a reduced student price of 6.00 Euros.
Museum Lichtspiele
Museum Lichtspiele is a small, old and sometimes over-crowded movie theater with 4 different show rooms and a distinctly old atmosphere. This theater shows new as well as old, both high and low budget, movies in their original English version. It is located on Lilienstr. 2, close to the Deutsches Museum, reachable by any S-Bahn to station Isartor, then walking or using tram 17 to the Deutsches Museum. - On Mondays (Cinema day) tickets cost 5.00 Euros.
- Rest of the week the price is 7.00 Euros, with a reduced student price of 6.00 Euros.
Swimming pools
Munich has a large number of swimming pools, both public and private. A good list of swimming pools can be found here on the SWM (Munich City Works) site www.swm.de. Here are two interesting swimming pools in Munich.
Olympia swimmhalle: This is the Olympic swimming hall used in the 1974 Olympic games. Entry to the swimming pool complex also gives access to a fitness center and other sport facilities. The pool is reachable by U3 to Olympiazentrum, then walk towards the olympic tower.
Dantebad: This is a warm water, open-air swimming pool, that is open in winter. It is best visited on a snowy day! The pool is at Postillionstr. 17, reachable by U1 to Westfriedhof.
Restaurants and cafes
Munich has a large collection of restaurants and cafes distributed all around the city, that cater for every possible taste. For those interested in trendy cafes and bars then the Schwabing district is place to be, where you can find some of the finest examples of architecture in Munich. Reachable by U3/U6 to Giselastr.
Biking
Bicycle lovers staying temporarily in Munich may rent or buy used bicycles for very reasonable prices. Here are some shops selling used bikes.
Der Radl-Markt: They offer secondhand bikes for 10 to 20 Euros! It is located at Untere Bahnhofstr. 53a, reachable by S5 to Germering-Unterpf. Tel. +49 89 428 900. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10:00AM-1:00PM + 2:00PM-6:30PM, Saturday 9:30AM-1:00PM.
Radl Bauer: They offer secondhand bikes for 29 Euros and above. It is located at Marsstr. 43 (opposite of Circus Krone main entrance). Tel. +49 89 531 109. Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 1:00PM-3:00PM. Internet: www.radlbauer.de.
Second Hand Sport: They offer secondhand bikes for 39 Euros and above. It is located at Nymphenburgerstr. 25. Tel. +49 89 597 074. Opening hours: Monday 1:00PM-7:00PM, Tuesday to Friday 10:00AM-7:00PM, Saturday 10:00AM-3:30PM. Internet: www.secondhand-sport.de.
