What I say :
18 singles, from the top draw of classic pop.Though don't confuse this pop from chart bubblegum pop, here the tunes are for keeps, every song has a reason, every sentiment is for real. Obviously, being a singles collection, this lacks some of the diversity that the ablums deliver, but without doubt most of the Smiths' gems are here, proving they were not just a great album band, but also a great singles band. Highpoints are difficult to pick out, as there are just so many, some tunes you will may love, other's you will like, but most you will adopt like a child, and cheeich and adore their every feleeting moment. The joy never stops, not one song falters, not one low point, just peak after peak at the summit of musical perfection. If you're the unconverted, buy this album, sit back and realise what you've missed out on, for too long already !

What some others think:

Bruce Trombley (Oklahoma USA)
From the opening harmonica wail of the impassioned "Hand In Glove" to the stirring conclusion of the darkly romantic "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Singles" provides a concise history documenting one of Britain's most compelling groups. Here the foundations of Britpop are laid. Neophytes beware: you might find yourself listening to this compilation repeatedly and obsessively. Don't be alarmed, though. Just dim the lights, take the phone of the hook, crawl into bed, preferably an empty one, and let Morrissey and Marr tuck you in with their eccentric pop notions. Highlights include, "This Charming Man", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "How Soon Is Now?", "The Boy With the Thorn In His Side", "Shoplifters of the World Unite", and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out".

What the Critics said :
"The Smiths' 18 singles in chronological order from the raw and breathtaking "Hand In Glove" to the posthumous, anthemic "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." In between are riches to make the head swim. The ears still prick up at that first pealing arpeggio from "This Charming Man," or the wry and plangent wit of "William," "It Was Really Nothing" and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" still brings a smile to the face, whilst "Panic," "Ask" and the brash, woefully underrated "Sheila Take A Bow" are alive with exuberance and a knowing self-assurance. "Shakespeare's Sister," a makeweight here, would be the highpoint of many lesser group's careers.

"How Soon Is Now," "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" … where does it stop?"

As you can see, the review for this album was rather short, so if anyone out there has a more detailed review please post it to me, and I'll put it on the site.

Or better still, some personal reviews of the albums would be brilliant.

"and eighteen month hard labour sounds ...fair enough"
