I really love my hamster, Miller, a whole lot. I've never
been too much of an animal lover before, but Miller and
I have bonded and I now think hamsters are awesome. Ladies
'n gents, lend me your ears, for I will now tell you the
story about how this li'l dude serendipidously came into
my life...
It was the 3rd of May, 2003. A dark night, a cold night--certainly
not an appropriate night for hamsters to be sauntering around
a parking lot. But that's where we found him. Dave and I
had just picked Becky up from a party, and were making our
ways back inside the apartment. And that's when I saw her
for the first time.
I was the first to spot this furball on the ground by the
bushes. Too small to be a squirrel, too cute to be a mouse.
What the heck is it? "A GUINEA PIG!!" I exclaimed.
Dave and Becky ran over to take a look.
Dave and I were pussies at first. "Does it have rabies?"
Dave wondered. I looked carefully at it.
"Hmm I don't think so. They're supposed to foam at
the mouth if they got rabies, right?"
No one answered me, but it was all good. Becky fearlessly
tried to grab it but it ran away as fast as lightning. I
was still afraid to touch it, so I ran upstairs to get a
broom and a bucket.
Dave and I eventually chased the little sucker around the
parking lot for twenty minutes before Dave finally tackled
it with a tupperware container. We brought it upstairs feeling
ecstatic.
Now, for the name. For whatever reason, I was under the
impression that it was more my pet than anyone else's, because
I was the one that saw it first, and Becky told me to name
it. I kept thinking about names before I finally coming
up with "Xavier" (I had just watched X-Men 2 earlier
that day). Dave however strongly shook his head in disapproval,
and said "Nooooo". We put the hamster in a crate
with an MGD box on top to keep it from climbing out. Someone
joked that we should name it "MGD", and then we
finally came up with the name Miller.
It was a power struggle for the attention of the hamster
at first. Phil was totally infatuated with it, and his face
would get red from laughing at it so much. He even followed
Dave and I to Walmart to help us look for a hamster cage.
It was funny because Kristen was getting annoyed because
she just wanted to go to the movies but Phil was kinda like
"screw this, I wanna play with Miller!" Dave was
also extremely taken by the hamster. I think he disapproved
with Phil and me playing with it too much, because he wanted
it to just get used to our scents and just get some sleep
as well. Dave exercised a lot of restraint in not playing
with it too much during the day. Me on the other hand--I
couldn't stop petting Miller. Until the stupid biatch bit
me and made my finger bleed.
Anyway, it's been a few months now since we first caught
Miller, and she's definitely brought a lot of joy to our
lives. I think she's dying though because she's not as hyper
as she used to be, and she's losing hair. Her hair behind
her ears are getting grey now which is kinda weird to me..
Aight peace out.
