ORIENTAL HEROES - PAST ISSUES 521 - 523

Firey God without his mask and others
Issue: 521
Cover: Firey God in the middle (without his mask) and from left to right Tiger Wong, Dragon Wong, Pudgy, Blazing Comet, Law Wong

Before I jump into the story let me try and establish who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Obviously, Tiger and Dragon Wong are good. Iron Stone is good as are Law Wong and Flute. Firey God, Blazing Comet, Wasp King and Fish Net are bad. Pudgy and Guy appear to be aligned with Firey God so I suppose that makes them bad. Living Buddha, Red Commander and Green Commander are also villians. Now lets get into the action

Law Wong and Flute are surrounded by Firey God, Living Buddha, Red Commander, Green Commander and a pile of Global Cult disciples. Pudgy and Guy are watching from the side lines.

Meanwhile, Tiger Wong, Dragon Wong and Iron Stone are making there way through the woods when they come across Blazing Comet, Wasp King and Fish Net. Tiger Wong warns his companions to avoid Blazing Comets' poisonous attack.

Wasp King rushes in to intercept Iron Stone while throwing a small bag at him. Iron Stone uses his sheathed sword to Fishnet gets a palm to the jaw block the bag, which rips open to reveal it's contents, a swarm of angry, poisonous wasps. So rapid are the wasps attack that Iron Stone has no chance to draw his sword. While Iron is distracted, Wasp King takes the opportunity to lunge forward with a series of finger shots. Iron Stone is forced backwards and eventually sent rolling head first down a hill to avoid Waps King's relentless assault. The wasps swarm around Iron, stinging him, causing his arms to swell and discolor from the poison. Wasp King delivers kicks to the stomach and head of Iron, knocking him into a pile of mud. The mud gives Iron Stone momentary relief from the wasps and he finally manages to get his sword out. The blazing blade heats the air, driving away the wasps and causing the poison in his arms to be expelled from his body. Wasp King and his bugs Iron Stone then launches his own attack against Wasp King.

Dragon Wong attacks Fish Net. She uses a series of kicks to defend against Dragon but he manages to knock her foot away and deliver a solid palm to the side of the head. Fish Net dodges a second palm by a half second. Dragon Wong starts to wander away so she attacks using a blade slipped into the tip of her boot but finds herself no match for Dragon Wong.

Tiger Wong is left with the toughest of the three, Blazing Comet. Blazing Comet exhales a cloud of black poison towards Tiger Wong but Tiger is able to use a spinning kick to avoid the gas and attack Comet. Tiger manages to get in quite a few kicks while occasionally dodging blasts of poison. The poison begins to take effect and Tiger Wong is forced to break off the attack to eliminate it.

Elsewhere, Dragon Wong has moved past Fish Net and is now fighting a group of armed guards. A balding character in a pink sweat suit steps in his way and challenges him. Dragon Wong is having a tough time with Mr. Pink Sweat Suit. Firey God has his own fight against Law Wong. He manages to grab Law in some kind of firey embrace and looks as if the fight may be over.

Personal Observations: I don't know exactly how long the Oriental Heroes have been battling Firey God but I suspect it has been a long time. The image that opens the past issues section was taken from a book of reprinted Oriental Heroes comics. Judging by the art I would say it takes place well before issue 521. By the way, don't get too used to the characters introduced here, they'll be dying off fast and furious before you know it.

Law Wong along with Firey God, Blazing Comet and Living Buddha in the background
Issue: 522
Cover: Law Wong in the front with Firey God, Blazing Comet and Living Buddha in the background
Published: November 16, 1985

Summary Added: November 13, 2000

Law Wong isn't finished yet and begins to battle back surprising Firey God with a backhand to the ear. Firey, however, returns the favor with a flurry of blazing palm shots that set Law's clothes on fire. Showing some fine sportsmanship Firey God allows Law a moment to rest and extinguish the flames using his protective air. After some brief meditation Law raises his inner power and literally blows the shirt off his body as he prepares to resume battle.

Meanwhile, Southern Temple and Guy are being blasted by Flutes' incapacitating music. When Guy cries out to his Flutes musical attack father that the musical note is splitting his brain, Southern Temple instructs him to use his Kung Fu to protect himself. Working together, he tells his son, they can defeat this thieving dog. Firey God's soldiers are forced to flee from the dizzying sound waves. Still frozen in place, Southern Temple begins to berate Flute for disgracing his wife and causing his daughter to leave.

This last tidbit of information may not mean much to my readers but it does establish some kind of motivation for Southern Temples intense hatred of Flute. It will mean more in later issues.

Northern Flute can only maintain a hold over his oppostion as long as he continues playing his note. Finally he runs out of steam and once the music stops the spell is broken. Southern Temple continues to verbally abuse Flute. From the dialogue it seems that the two were friends in the past. Northern Flute is ashamed to be fighting Southern Temple but made some sort of vow to Law Wong. Guy can no longer contain his anger and leaps towards Flute, shouting that he will butcher him. None of his strikes get through due to some fancy blocking by Flute but the distaction allows Southern Temple to get in a long distance finger strike. While Flute is off balance, Southern Temple rushes forward delivering a foot to the stomach and a backhand to the side of the face. but seem equally matched against their musical opponent. Together they manages to break through Pipers defense and force him to flee. He stops short and begins hitting them with his sound again.

Dragon Wong continues his fight with Pink Sweatsuit. Even with Pink Sweatsuit some outside interference from Living Buddha, Dragon dominates the battle. Pink Sweatsuit begins spinning around to keep Dragon Wong at bay. Dragon manages to slip through and give Sweatsuit a solid palm to the back of the head sending him to the dirt. Global Cult thugs and then Living Buddha attack giving Pink Sweatsuit time to recover and resume his attack. Sweatsuit grabs Blazing Comet ahold of Little Dragon but gets his neck broken in the process.

Blazing Comet renews his attack against Tiger Wong who is trying to rid himself of the poison. Comet misses with a palm strike and Tiger is off target with a kick. Tiger Wong manages to strike with a series of kicks before Comet once again hits with with a blast of poison. Blazing Comet grabs Tiger by the leg and begins spinning him around. Tiger Wongs' body is literally burning up. Again, Comet hits him with poison. Tigers' body begins to wither away from poison and the flames. Iron Stone rushes in to defend Tiger but by the time Comet tosses Tiger away he's nothing but a gaunt shell of his former self.

Back to Law Wong. He attacks Firey God with a whirlwind attack and manages to get in a solid palm shot to the back. He goes for a finger strike but has it blocked. Firey God comes back with his own swirling assault, smashing Law Wong to the ground. He follows up with a palm strike to the forehead that connects full force.

Personal Observation : I would suspect that Law Wong is probably a relative of Tiger and Dragon given their last names. If I were to take a guess I would say he's probably an uncle.

Translating Fun: As always names are often tough to translate. When I initially begin translating names I often put in temporary dummy names until I can figure out what the actual name is. Law Wong was originally translated to Net Sorcerer because I was confused as to which characters were being used to compose his name. Pink Sweatsuit, Pudgy and several others are still using their dummy names, based on physical appearance, until I can figure out what there actual names are. Although I have determined what characters compose Fish Net's name, I have been unable to translate them so she will continue with her temporary name for the time being. If you read these synopsis's multiple times don't be surprised if I completely change a characters name.

ISSUE 523 Tiger Wong and Law Wong
Cover: Tiger Wong and Law Wong

A loud crack echoes through the courtyard as Firey God and Law Wong collide. The resulting explosion sends each combatant careening backwards. Red and Green Commander are shocked as Firey Red Commander God is sent crashing into a group of Global Cult thugs, through the back courtyard wall, through a temple wall and into a large pillar. The impact is so powerful that the column is cracked in half and the temples shingles, after being blown off the roof, begin raining down on Firey God. Firey uses his protective air to blow the tiles off himself smashing them into his Global Cult troops.

Meanwhile, Dragon Wong and Flute run over to help Law Wong who was just sent tumbling down the temple steps. Dragon half considers attacking Firey God but decides instead that assisting Law is top priority. Living Buddha rushes to the aid of Pink Sweatsuit but finds him dead from a broken neck. Living Buddha screams out Dragon Wong's name and vows to chop him into a thousand pieces.

Iron Stone is busy trying to protect Tiger Wong. He grabs up Tigers' immaciated body and swings his flaming sword wildly to protect them from Blazing Comet and crew. Iron rushes off with Tiger leaving the villians behind. Iron Stone lays his blazing sword across Tiger Wong body to help heel while they along with Law Wong and Flute make there escape in a van. They make there way back to there temple. Law Wong is helped by several monks. Tiger Wong is brought to a hospital and hooked up to an IV and Iron Stone resperator. Eventually Tiger is taken back to the Oriental Heroes dojo in an ambulance.

Meanwhile, Blazing Comet is meditating and raises his inner power. His body starts to smoke and erupts into flames. Comet is forced to leap through a window out into a pond outside. The water cools off his body, creating a cloud of steam. Wasp King and Plague look on concerned. The water was only temporary and his body bursts into flames once again.

Personal Observations: Keen obsevers will recognize Blazing Comet from his brief appearance in Jademan's Kung Fu Special. It contained a very brief history of Oriental Heroes including flashbacks of Tiger Wong and Gold Dragon whipping on some Global Cult assasins. Tiger was shown elimintating a fellow named Blazing Inferno while Dragon took care of Blazing Comet. Yes, Gold Dragon will eventually kill Blazing Comet and in a way this shows the stark contrast between the styles of Tiger Wong and Gold Dragon. Although Tiger is considered a better fighter, it is Dragon's near total immunity to poison that allows him to walk right over guys like Blazing Comet (a man who came very close to killing Tiger Wong last issue).
