ISSUE 524 Living Buddha
Cover: Living Buddha

It looks as if Blazing Comet didn't just drain the Nine Suns Kung Fu energy from Tiger Wong, he actually absorbed it and now the overloaded inner power is literally burning Comet from within. After igniting again, Blazing Comet attempts to smother the flames by rolling around on the ground. This fails. He neads to transfer away some of the energy quickly so he leaps towards his son, Wasp King, meeting him palm to palm. He pumps some of his burning internal power into Wasp King, who is forced to break off to release some of the energy. Comet, still ablaze jumps towards Gray Hair. Again, palm to palm Blazing Comet releases his inner power Dude Chan causing Gray's body to swell. Gray explodes leaving nothing more than a burnt out husk.

Back at the Oriental Heroes dojo Law Wong is busy meditating in front of a V-shaped formation of candles. Law looks to be in pain and seems to go into a fit. Some monks enter and help him into bed.

Elsewhere, Dude Chan is sitting next to a lake on a moonlit night. He Pudgy tosses a stone into the water while thinking back to the treacery of his son, Chan Ou Wan. Gold Dragon wanders up and offers Dude his jacket for warmth. The two of them then sit down to drink some tea and chat for a while.

Meanwhile, Chan and a white haired woman are busy hiking through a jungle. They are attacked by a swarm of angry mosqitoes and are forced to flee. They run through the woods but end up getting caught in quicksand. The woman sinks under while the bugs swarm around Chan.

Guy is with his father Pudgy. His father does not look well. Guy sits behind his father, lays his hands on his dad's back and fills him with inner power. Pudgy seems much better and leaps into a tree. Using a finger strike he splits the tree right down the middle.

Living Buddha is off meditating in some kind of bunker. He has pins stuck in his body (I assume this is a form of accupuncture). Using his inner power he draws the pins into his body and then expels them. Shades continues to raise his power level. Energy swirls around him and he causes the entire bunker to explode outward. Living Buddha and Pudgy visit Green Commander at his office. Suddenly, Mr. Green's desk collapses and Firey God steps out from behind a curtain.

Heroes' factoid: Well, it turns out that Wasp King is Blazing Comet's son and I'm going to take a guess the Fish Net is his daughter. They all do share the same bright red hair color.

Heroes' factoid: Dude Chan is the unfortunate father of Chan Ou Wan. There are a couple of references to him in the U.S. comics. In one issue Gold Dragon goes into a rage when he finds out that Chan killed his own dad. Also, Chan Ou Wan tends to suffer from nightmares of guilt over the people he has killed in the past. One of the faces that appears in the nightmares is that of Dude Chan although he isn't referred to by name.

The poisonous mosquitos attack at Chan Ou Wan's eyes blinding him. Chan raises his inner power to force some distance between him and the mosquitos and then cleaves through them in an attempt to get to the location where Orchid Blossom sank. Suddenly, Orchid's head pops back up through the quicksand. She rises up, held under the arm of strange bald headed man wearing an air tank. It's odd that this strange man is able to stand up in the middle of a pool of quicksand. He scoops up the unconcious Orchid Blossom into an embrace and gives her a kiss. Quicksand Creature The strange man turns and laughs at Chan with a sound like grinding metal, then hops away through the quicksand. Chan takes one step in persuit and sinks right down into the sand. He lays his backpack across the quicksand and uses it to handspring out. He then lightfoots' it to safer ground. Chan notices that a line of rope has been strung up just under the surface of the quicksand. This is how the strange man was able to keep from sinking. He knew where each rope support was strung up and just walked across them. Chan follows in the footprints left by the creature and heads off to rescue Orchid. The creature, who has dashed off to a cave, tosses Orchid Blossom into an underground lake to wash the sand off of her. He jumps into the water but gets an elbow to the face for his troubles. She climes out of the water and opens a vial containing three bugs that immediately attack the creature. He squashes the bugs and knocks her unconcious. Chan arrives at the cave to find the creature bent over the woman and flings a knife at him. The creature deflects the knife using a metal forearm brace. The creature rises up and reveals that his metal braces flip out to form three blades that he can uses as a weapon. He launches an attack and poisons Chan Ou Wan with his blades.

Elsewhere, Firey God is at a temple with Living Buddha, Green Orchid Blossom Commander and Pudgy. Firey God decides to test his Kung Fu against Living Buddha and completely outclasses him.

Later that evening, Living Buddha and Pudgy head out to attack a temple while dressed in all black. A guard (the first member of a group called the Four Sword Warriors) arrives and begins to fight with Living Buddha. The fight ends when Pudgy launches an attack on the guard from behind. Three more guards arrive but eventually go down to defeat. Finally, Dragon Wong and Flute arrive to face off against Living Buddha and Pudgy.

Personnal Observations: Chan Ou Wan does seem to have his problems with weird creatures hanging around patches of quicksand. (see issue 696 for another example). Isn't it nice to see Chan actually caring about the safety of a friend. See, he does have some emotions. Don't worry though. In the english translated series he decides that Orchid Blossom has betrayed him and kills her. That's the Chan we all know and love.
