ISSUE 692
Tiger Wong with the children of Happy and Sad Administrator
Cover : A Red Haired (??) Tiger Wong and the children of Happy and Sad Administrators.

Tiger Wong along with two of the injured bikers arrive at what appears to be a still operating White Sect base. There he meets the adult children of Happy and Sad Administrators. Sad Tiger Whisker Administrators' son, Sad Wine Drinker appears to have some medical knowledge and examines one of the injured bikers. Happy Administratora' son, Happy Red, is a big, jolly bald headed fellow. Later on, after everyone has introduced themselves the base is alerted to trouble by the sound of barking dogs. White Sects' traitorous Lions have returned and begin to attack. Tiger Wong fights Single-Horn Leo while Sad Wine Drinker takes on Tiger Whiskers. Happy Red fights the Global Cult goons that came with the Lions. Both lions find themselves completely overmatched. Sad Wine Drinker pummels Tiger Whiskers and then punches him right off a cliff. In the end we see the Iron Todd has arrived with Jin Bu Wan and Red Eagle.

Background Info: White sect was compossed of many smaller teams with animal names, for instance the snakes, bears and rodents. When Global Cult decided to eradicate White Sect some of the teams switched sides to avoid being killed. One of these groups was the Lions. This is the group that has returned in this issue.

Iron Todd

Tiger Wong delivers some brutal kicks to the head of Single-Horn Leo who, at this point, can no longer defend himself. Tiger decides that Leo has had enough and calls an end to the fight. However, the damage has already been done and blood continues to pour from his head. With his skull fractured, Single-Horn Leo collapses to the ground, finally paying the ultimate price for his betrayal.

Since, Happy Red seems to be having no problems pummeling Global Cults' thugs, Tiger rushes off to see how Sad Wine Drinker is doing. He arrives just as Sad finishes punching Tiger Whisker off the cliff through the bridges wooden gateway below. Looking up from the bridge is Iron Todd flanked by Red Eagle and Jin Bu Wan. Sad decides to take a guzzle on his wine filled gourd in preparation for further battle. A thick fog has begun to roll in, obscuring the battlefield.

Let me break for a moment to describe the weapon that Jin Bu Wan is about to use. In China some coins are minted with square holes cut into their centers. Bu Wan takes a strip of thick silk and ties one of these coins to the end. He can then swing the weighted tip around with lethal force.

Bu Wan flings one of the coins up and buries it into the top of the Fighting Mad Iron Todd cliff face. The other end he drives into one of the bridges wooden planks. Red Eagle then uses the silk linking the two coins like a ramp and runs up it to reach the top of the cliff. He makes it about half way up before Sad Wine Drinker shatters the cliff with his fist causing the coin to pop out. As his cloth bridge drops out from beneath him Red Eagle crouches down and pushes off the air itself, flipping himself up and onto the top of the cliff. Sad Wine Drinker prepares to battle Red Eagle while Tiger Wong leaps down to take on Jin Bu Wan. Bu Wan is fast and begins swinging around three and four coins at a time. However, Tiger Wong is just too skilled and eventually boots him right over the side of the bridge.

Finally, we get to see the fight that I have waited a long time for. Iron Todd casually places his glasses in their case, removes his coat and assumes his fighting stance. Todd turns out to be a formitable fighter, surprising Tiger with his speed and catching him with a few stiff shots. After taking a stinging palm to the back Tiger Wong decides to end it and delivers a devastating kick that smashes Iron Todd right through the bridge.

Translating Fun: One of the most difficult parts of translating Chinese comics is coming up with names for the characters. In the american version some characters had there names translated and some were left with their original Chinese pronunciation (ie. Lone Kwoon Tin, Yek Yi Fai etc). I have theories on why many of them were not translated but some may simply be impossible to properly express in english. Take Sad Administrators' son for instance. The first character of his name translates to Sad. This is the family name. The second character translates to lonely. The last character is defined as Feast, Banquet or the act of Drinking Wine. I chose the last one because upon occasion he does drink wine during his fights. There is, however, no word in english for drinking wine. Some names I considered include, Sad Alcoholic and Sad Drinker. How about Lonely Alcoholic, that would be a pleasant name. If anyone can come up with a better name than Sad Wine Drinker, please e.mail me with your suggestion. While on the subject I also don't like the name Happy Red.

ISSUE 694
Tiger Wong
Cover: Tiger Wong

Iron Todd is far from finished. As he is being smashed through the bridge, Todd manages to hook his feet on a board and propel himself back up towards Tiger Wong. Tiger delivers another kick that knocks Todd backwards. Todd gets up and uses his girth to barrel into Tiger, knocking him ten feet back. Todd attempts a punch but has it blocked by Tigers' kick. Tiger delivers another kick and a final crushing kick that sends Iron Todd through the bridge again, this time to join Jin Bu Wan in the water below.

Sad Wine Drinker isn't doing nearly as well. Red Eagle starts off a series of punches including a solid shot to the face. He follows up with a kick to the stomach. Sad Wine Drinker lunges forward with a some finger thrusts but Red Eagle dodges them and returns with a vicious elbow to the back followed by a backhand to Sad's Red Eagle shoulder. Eagle gets off yet another powerful punch to Sad's face, grabs the back of his head and delivers a knee to the cranuim. Sad staggers back nearly unconcious. When his senses return Red Eagle has vanished into the fog. Sad Wine Drinker is releaved until a pair of hands reach out from behind him grabbing his neck and pulling out a large chunk of his throat. Sad Wine Drinker staggers backwards clutching his neck, his eyes as wide as saucers. He moves forward again with a weak finger attack but Red Eagle just starts teeing off on Sad pounding him from every angle. Yet another punch lands directly on Sad's cheek knocking him backwards. One more shot sends him careening, shattering his head against a boulder. Sad is finally finished. Happy Red sees that the tide is now turning against them and battle with renewed vigor.

From out of the fog arrives the third member of Global Cults' new section heads, Elegent Gentleman carrying a bouquet of flowers. He tosses the flowers towards the lifeless body of one of the mystery bikers. Suddenly, White Sects' headquarters explodes into rubble. Tiger Wong sees the explosion and rushes up to help. Master Elegent backs off as a Global Cult goon flies past him. Suddenly a foot emerges from the fog smacking Elegent upside the head and knocking him to the ground. Master Elegent rolls backwards as Tiger Wong steps out to face him.

The situation is getting grave. Sad Wine Drinker has been killed leaving Happy Red and Tiger Wong alone to face four Global Cult department heads.

Translating Fun: Well, Iron Todd didn't fare too well in his first fight although there certainly is no shame in losing to Tiger Wong. Now remember that Iron is the family name and not a description of Todd. Whoever was translating names seems to have just tacked on a generic american name for him. His name actually translates to Three Young Gentleman. I'm not sure what the Three portion is for but Young Gentleman seems appropriate.
