What is homoeopathy? In very simple terms, homeopathy is a method of curing the sufferings of a person by medicines which have been proved to possess the power of producing similar sufferings in a healthy person. It works on the principle of "Similia Similibus Curentur" meaning "likes are cured by likes". In homeopathy, the sucess of treatment lies in correctly identifying the medicine whose characteristics perfectly match the patient's set of symptoms. top What is the modus operandii (mode of action) of homoeopathic medicines? To understand this, let us first consider the action of vaccines. Vaccines are prepared from plasma of an infected person & thus can be considered as artificial or drug diseases. When a vaccine is injected into a healthy person,it creates antibodies.During this period. the person exhibits certain disease-like symptoms which vanish in a short time & the person is considered immunised versus the disease. Similarly homeopathic medicine tries to produce an artificial disease similar to the one a person is suffering from. This artificial disease is stronger than the natural disease & eliminates it.After running it's duration this artificial disease then also vanishes & the person is cured. top What is the difference between homeopathic & allopathic method of treatment? Allopathic method of treatment has specific remedies for specific diseases & all persons suffering from the same disease are treated with the same drugs. Homoeopathy tries to individualize. It tries to view & treat each patient as a whole & not just the disease. thus ten different persons suffering from the same disease may require ten different remedies. top What are the sources of homoeopathic medicine? Majority of the homoeopathic medicines are derived from the plant kingdom. All parts of plants can be used to prepare medicines.Other sources are minerals, some others are derived from animal kingdom.Yet others may be obtained from diseased tissues(similar to vaccines).Whatever the source, the medicines are diluted to such an extent (by a method called potentisation), that the final remedy contains extremely minute quantities of the source & is yet perfectly effective. That is the reason homoeopathy has no side-effects. top Does homoeopathy have any limitations? Yes, like any other system of medicine, homeopathy also has it's own limitations. For eg.a surgical problem which has progressed far beyond its initial stages might not respond to homoeopathy.Similarly some sudden life threatening situations like heart attacks, paralytic strokes, diabetic comas etc. might have to be initially treated with allopathy, till the patient is out of danger. Besides, there is still a debate on whether some specific infections should be treated by allopathy or homoeopathy eg.TB,typhoid & malaria. top |
