Case 10- a case of osteo-arthritis of the knee treated with homeopathyHistory: A 62 year old man presented with pain in both the knees with a visible ball like hard swelling in the fold behind both the knees. This hampered movement & been tapped twice to remove the fluid but after some days the fluid would collect again. The orthopaedicians had diagnosed it as a bursa secondary to osteo-arthritis & advised surgery.Besides he had been on pain-killers for almost a year with the result that his blood pressure had now increased & he also had to take blood pressure reducing tablets.Examination & treatment: The first aim in treatment was to reduce the pain & the size of the swellings to make movements comfortable. I asked the patient to stop all the pain-killers that he had been taking. I also planned to start a mild dose of homeopathic medicine for blood pressure so as to be able to taper & eventually stop allopathic tablet sfor blood pressure. Results: In the first few weeks, the pain had reduced somewhat & the swellings had become softermaking movements a little easier. At the end of 3 months, the pain was substantially better & the swellings had started reducing in size. His blood pressure had also started coming down & I was able to reduce his allopathic dose to half. At the end of six months, the swelling behind the left knee had almost disappeared & that behind the right had further reduced & was very soft. He had now started walking daily for about one hour. Besides he now did not require any medication for his blood pressure & both the allopathic & homeopathic medicines for the same had been stopped. At the end of one year of treatment there was no pain or swelling & we decided to stop the medicines. It's been three years since then & the swelling behind the left knee has never appeared again. The swelling behind the right knee occasionally appears slightly when the patient undertakes a long journey by road or train but it subsides again with about 2-3 weeks of treatment.Besdies the patient walks for two hours daily & his blood pressure is well under control without medication. The pain in the kness is felt slightly while descending the staircase but that should not be cause for concern considering that he is now 67 years old. He has been advised to continue his daily supplement of Calcium tablets for his osteo-arthritis. |
