Case 5- a case of irregular & heavy bleeding (dysfunctional uterine bleeding )in a woman nearing menopauseHistory: A 48 year old lady came to me with the complaint of irregular periods with very heavy bleeding since 2 years. At times the bleeding wouldn't stop even with hormonal tablets with the result that she had undergone curretting 2-3 times to stop the bleeding. All her reports including the biopsy reports to rule out cancer& sonography were normal. Her problem was thus diagnosed as dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) which is nothing but a hormonal imbalance occuring in many women nearing menopause. She had even been put on a course of contraceptive pills for some time to control her bleeding & make her periods regular. But things would be under control only so long as she was on the tablets.Hence she had been advised to undergo surgery to remove her uterus as a last resort. The patient came to me since she was not in a position to undergo surgery at that stage due to her work commitments & wanted relief for sometime so that the surgery could be postponed. Examination & treatment: My first aim during treatment was to be able to stop her bleeding whenever it occured, without the help of hormonal tablets.Besides, I aimed at establishing a regular cycle of menses even if it was not necessarily a monthly one, but I wanted to make sure that the cycles were not shorter than 25 days. |

Result: I started with medicines aimed at making her cycles regular.A few days after starting treatment, she started bleeding which was again very heavy. I then gave her medicines to stop the bleeding & it stopped within a week without hormones. The medicines for regular cycles were continued again & her next menstrual period was after 22-25 days. For the next 3-4 months her periods occured every 22-25 days & there was no bleeding between periods.During all these months, she was always given homeopathic medicines after the 3 rd day during her menses to stop bleeding .Then I stopped giving her the bleeding control medicines during the periods & she coped very well without them, never once requiring hormones to stop the bleeding. Over the next 8-10 months her cycles were fairly regular, her menses occuring every 30-40 days. Then, she started getting menses every 50-60 days but her bleeding would stop without any medicines.Slowly her cycles were more prolonged & during the 3rd year of treatment when there were no menses for 6 months, her medicines were discontinued. For the last 2 years after stopping treatment, she has been in good health. | |||||||||||||||||||
