roleplay games
Spirits of the Earth
Created by an experienced RPer, and it shows. Lots of freedom of character development and storyline. Includes wolf, dragon, unicorn, and human roleplay areas. Definitely one of the best. SotE bitchslaps most other rpgs. (plus the fantabulous webmistress was officially the first person to pimp s&m)
Runes of Desire
An engaging rpg of talented young writers. You can join one of the long, epic storylines already in progress or start your own. A very organized community with active admins and moderators. Doesn't get much better than this.
Role Play Gamer's Alliance
A great site to bum around on if you're looking for just about any kind of RPG. You can't swing a dead cat in this place without hitting at least one RPG site that tickles your fancy. Has a nice forum for you to skulk around on, too.

Speculations
Speculations is actually a fantasy/scifi magazine and this is its website. They have this snazzy thing called the Rumor Mill, where actual professional, published authors discuss just about any writing topic you can think of. If you write speculative fiction, or even if you just write, this is an great resource.
Fanfiction.net
If you haven't at least heard of this place then apparently you've been living in a cave, sealed off from all civilization, with a blindfold on and cotton balls stuck in your ears. GO HERE!!! This site rawks. Worhsip it.
Peter's Evil Overlord List
Basically this is a list of all the stupid, cliched things that villains do, particularly those in the sci-fi genre. While not technically a writing site, it's the perfect example of what NOT to do with your villains, and in fact reminds you to pay attention to the rest of your characters as well. Oh, and it's hella-funny. I laughed so hard I nearly busted a lung.
