Campaign Headlines: Panama Could Change Electoral College If It Gains Statehood Before the Election.
It is estimated that Panama's population of 4 million people, double that of 20 years ago, would constitute 9 Electoral votes. This would be an important boost to DeLeon, who trails in the Electoral College by 47 Electoral votes, behind his closest major opponents: Indigo Retina and Nelson DiChezzerai. It would also add to the already insane nature of the campaign so far. "This is a major October Surprise," says Drew Porter of the Atlanta Inquisitor, "This Campaign has had more twists than a snake in a washing machine, whatever that means." DeLeon has made a statement in recent days, commenting on his position in the Electoral College. The statement reads, "I will begin to focus on the states too close to call, and other closely divided states. My opponents would be smart to watch their poll numbers." He also commented on Panama's possible statehood, saying "I would not be opposed to Panaman statehood, especially if it meant free 20-minute long-distance state-to-state phone calls to Panama. That would be nifty." Meanwhile, several already-existing states shifted around in the Electoral College. Wisconsin entered the "Too close to call" column while Missouri leaned back into Retina territory. Stay tuned next week for a possible entrance of Panama into the Electoral College.Back to the Campaign Trail Headline Links
