Campaign Headlines:
Panama Could Change Electoral College
If It Gains Statehood Before the Election.
The citizens of Panama, a US territory since 2011, are voting as this is being printed on whether to apply for U.S. statehood. If they vote for statehood, it would almost certainly fly through the 2 houses of Congress before the Election of 2020. This is due to the fact that polls in Panama suggest a heavy leaning toward Satch DeLeon, and DeLeon's Tragically Hip Party currently holds a razor-thin majority in the House and Senate. President Connery's Press Secretary Pierce Brosnan has also made a statement suggesting he would approve of any application for statehood that Panama would make. This is due to the expanded use of the Panama Canal in recent years.
This has never happened before, so it is difficult to tell if it is possible for a state to come into the Union right before a major national election. There is nothing in the Constitution that forbids it, so loose-interpretators of the Constitution can make a case that it is allowable.

It is estimated that Panama's population of 4 million people, double that of 20 years ago, would constitute 9 Electoral votes. This would be an important boost to DeLeon, who trails in the Electoral College by 47 Electoral votes, behind his closest major opponents: Indigo Retina and Nelson DiChezzerai. It would also add to the already insane nature of the campaign so far.

"This is a major October Surprise," says Drew Porter of the Atlanta Inquisitor, "This Campaign has had more twists than a snake in a washing machine, whatever that means."

DeLeon has made a statement in recent days, commenting on his position in the Electoral College. The statement reads, "I will begin to focus on the states too close to call, and other closely divided states. My opponents would be smart to watch their poll numbers." He also commented on Panama's possible statehood, saying "I would not be opposed to Panaman statehood, especially if it meant free 20-minute long-distance state-to-state phone calls to Panama. That would be nifty."

Meanwhile, several already-existing states shifted around in the Electoral College. Wisconsin entered the "Too close to call" column while Missouri leaned back into Retina territory. Stay tuned next week for a possible entrance of Panama into the Electoral College.
