A
Brief History of the AUP Indonesian Chorale
AUP Indonesian
Chorale was founded in February 1996 by its music director,
Gamaliel Simorangkir as a music major at the AUP College of Arts
and Science. Since 1997 the group is a member of the Buklod Musika,
a selected outstanding musical group dedicated to excellence in
performance.
At present, the
Chorale is a 26-strong choir with the members hailing from
different field of studies. The Chorale performs a wide and varied
repertoire; from renaissance motets to contemporary Asian works;
from folk music to popular pieces combined with variety of
choreographies.
The Chorale has
been vigorously active in the local and international choral
scene. Traveling to many parts in the Philippines and Indonesia,
the choir went for a summer concert series in the USA and
Canada last April-July 2000.
Under Mr.
Gamaliel Simorangkir, the AUPIC was primarily a touring choir. In
December 1997 the choir went on a Christmas Tour in Jakarta,
Indonesia and surrounding cities. They performed gala concert at
the Jakarta Cultural Hall and appeared on a national TV program.
Their first album "The Unshakable Kingdom" was produced
on November the same year. By October 1998, the chorale has toured
around Metro Manila, Quezon City, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga,
Batangas and other cities in Luzon. Since then the choir has been
an important partner of the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines
for promoting Indonesian cultures and arts. On their third
anniversary, AUPIC performed a production concert at the
PhilamLife Cultural Hall, Manila dubbed "Tribute to My
Homeland", on April 1999. AUPIC performs at least 20 concerts
each year.
Behind the
success of the choir is Professor Dante C. Oblimar, of the
Universitas Advent Indonesia. Acting as vocal clinician,
music advisor and choreographer he brought the choir to a higher
level of performance, enhancing the choir's local reputation and
as well as professional performances.
In May
1999, Aylwin Yonathan assumed the directorship of AUPIC. A
young musician whose ingenuity brought different colors to the
choir's repertoire. He transcribes ethnic songs, and
rearranged pieces which suits to expand the potentials of the
chorale.
The choir
is funded through solicitations to sponsors by the efforts of the
AUP-IC Fund Raising Committee®. From a humble beginning of
16-members who responded to an audition at a small chamber beside
an old gymnasium--despite criticism and doubts, the chorale is now
a 30 member professional singers with more than 90 alumni to date,
and a lot of faith at heart
