John Clare John Clare (1793-1864)

Born in Helpston, Cambridgeshire, England, John Clare gives every manic-depressive hope: he wrote most of his best poetry from an asylum at Northampton, England, where he spent the last 23 years of his life.

His Poems Descriptive of Rural Life, published in 1820 was well-received.   Still, Clare lived most of his life in poverty.
