According to MDOT/MRRC, it was March 12, 1895 when Epworth League Railway in Mason County was organized, building the four mile long line from Ludington to Hamlin Lake. In 1901, the Epworth League Railway was bought by Ludington & Northern.
Ludington & Northern Railway Company was purchased by the Sargent Sand company. Sargent Sand began mining operations in 1936, selling sand to foundries for auto parts such as cylinder heads and brake parts. Their rails ran from Ludington to Epworth Heights, then known as North Epworth, and continued to Hamlin Lake at the southernmost boundary of the Ludington State Park. The rails were used for transportation of sand from Sargent Sand's 79.6 acre mining operation. When Sargent Sand no longer mined the area, the railway saw virtually no use. The Ludington & Northern Railroad officially became an abandoned line on Jan. 15, 1982. The tracks were removed shortly thereafter.

This is the very last house before entering the Ludington State Park. This house sits at the first curve and had a caboose sitting near it for so long. I don't know the historical significance of the building or why the caboose was left behind. If you do, please tell me via email. |
