Francoist Propaganda
Fr. Alexander McCabe noted in his journal:
"The 'reds' looted the Escorial, sold all the pictures in the prado for Russian gold, cut all the trees in Castellana and the Retiro parks. All this is pure rubbish as I saw with my own two eyes when the struggle was over. In a war, civil or otherwise, the first victim and casuality is truth. The Spanish atrocity stories were every bit as crude and savage as the atrocities that both sides committed."
