Key figures include the philosophical manager Auggie (Keitel), the burnt-out novelist Paul Benjamin (Hurt), the worldly wise teenager Rashid (Perrineau) whom Hurt more or less adopts, and the boy's actual father (Whitaker), whom he hasn't seen since infancy.
