Standardbreds in the 21st century can be found just about everywhere. From the show ring to endurance riding, the popularity of the Standardbred is gaining momentum. Once bred for harness racing that required the horse to sometimes compete in more than just one race on a race day, the standardbred needed to be strong and stocky enough to handle this tough task. The modern day standardbred doesn't compete as often as it used to and emphasis has turned towards more all out speed. Thus today's standardbred has evolved as a finer, more athletic, stylish looking horse. Scroll down to the Photo Gallery and see standardbreds in the show ring. Prejudice against the breed is finally becoming rapidly outdated as the standardbred continues to prove themselves worthy of respect and admiration. |

The Standardbred Pleasure & Performance Horse Association is a wonderful non-profit organisation that (apart from many other things!), can assist with the placement of retired harness horses in suitable homes. Standardbreds do not even have to be broken in to saddle - being the very adaptable horse that they are - they can be quite readily retrained. Looking for a Standardbred? - these sites are a great place to start!! Take a look at their individual websites for more info & standardbred news. |
Although not common, sensational coloured standardbreds are gaining in popularity and are being purposefully bred. |

The Standardbred generally has a placid & easy going nature that is suited perfectly to a life after racing as a pleasure horse, in the show ring or endurance rides. Standardbreds that have raced, have been educated to bright lights, traffic, many float trips, noise - oh, and patience (standing in the stalls waiting for their race!) Many have been on treadmills, walking machines, led alongside vehicles and even been swimming as an alternative excercise. |

And what about this for brave & versatile!! Vince Silvestri's "Hot to Trot" show is something you must see if you get the chance. Exploding fireworks coming from the cart with Vince standing on the shafts - whilst steering the horse with his teeth!! I'd like to see another breed capable of accepting that! Vince's show has been seen in Australia and overseas. Simply awesome. Check out the site: hot2trot! |

Warman, aka "Willy" - was a very successful harness racehorse earning in excess of $125,000. Showing Standardbreds incredible versatility - he is now happily being retrained under saddle under the obvious wonderful care of Joedy of "Lowland Lodge" - Performance Horses. Doesn't he look terrific - obviously enjoying his new direction in life! Thanks Joedy for sharing with us. |
But what about Western Australia?! - Sam, a member of the West Australian Standardbred Breeders Assoc. has said hello and the group is striving to make the Standardbred a common feature in the show ring. Their website link appears to not be active anymore. Does anyone know of a website available covering Standardbreds in WA ? Email me. |

History - of the Standardbred |
Interested in how the standardbred came to be? The International Museum of the Horse, located at Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Kentucky USA (origin of the Standardbred), has got a nice summarisation of the Standardbred beginnings. They also summarise harness racing today, breed characteristics, harness racing terminology and breed organisations. |
