Introduction

1879-84 War of the Pacific

Conflict between Chile and the allied nations of Peru and Bolivia, sometimes called the Chile–Peruvian War, was fought over the rights to nitrate deposites in the Bolivian province of Atacam. Bolivia reneged on the February 1879 treaty allowing Chilean companies rights to mine the deposites. Chile took the port of Antofagasta. Peru joined the conflict on the side of Bolivia on the basis of an 1873 defensive alliance. By the end of the year Chile had also taken the Peruvian province of Tarapacá. In 1880, Chile invaded Chorillos and Miraflores and took both the provinces of Tacna and Arica and by January, 1881 had taken the capital, Lima.Through a series of treaties from 1883 to 1904, Chile aquired Tarapacá, Tacna and Arica from Peru as well as Bolivia’s Atacama, leaving Bolivia as a landlocked nation without sea access.
