Introduction

1900 Boxer Rebellion

Economic and political exploitation of China by various Western powers and Japan and humiliating military defeats inflicted by Britain in the Opium Wars and by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War created Chinese resentment which was compounded by general economic problems. In 1899, a secret society, known as the Boxers, began a campaign of terror against Christian missionaries in the northeastern provinces. When they entered the capital, Beijing, the foreign powers dispatched a relief expedition consisting of British, French, Japanese, Russian, German, and American troops to secure their interests in the capital.

Scenario

This is a solitaire study scenario on the attack on the fortifications and villages of Taku and Tongku on the morning of 17 June 1900. It is an unusual use of the GWAS system. The rules are used intact but the scale has been changed to fit the conflict. The map and counters are not interchangeable with the other GWAS series due to this difference of scale.
